Waitrose, manky turkey - WWYD?

millie&me, 29 December, 2008 at 11:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I bought a turkey crown thingy from Waitrose on 22nd for our Christmas lunch only to find that when I took it out to cook on the day, it was absolutley rank! It stank and the meat had that odd sheen to it, so it was very obviously off! It had been bought, walked home (about 4 minutes from the store!) and immediately put in the fridge, nothing else had gone off, so it muct have just been a dodgy one.

I was absolutely bloody fuming - I had guests for Christmas lunch and naff all turkey to cook. To be fair, everyone was great about it, and we had cheese, biscuits, smoked samlon etc - but it just wasn't the same.

So on Saturday morning I went back to Waitrose and took the manky turkey with me. The lady on the customer service desk, just said 'I'm very sorry, here's double your money back'. I asked to speak to a manager who said 'very sorry, you've had double your money back, here's £20 in vouchers' as well'.

Now, that's all very well and good, but it was Chrsitams lunch FFS - I had a pile of veg ready to prep and cook, all the associated 'bits' (stuffing, sausages, sauce etc) and pudding, all bought from Waitrose and although we could have had a 'lunch' it just didn't feel like christmas lunch without having the turkey IYSWIM

So WWYD - would you pursue it and get in touch with head office, or just be grateful for what you had? TBH the £20 doesn't cover the cost of all the other food. They just didn't seem particularly bothered - I know the manager I spoke to was a 'duty' manager and was only about 12 years old, but should they have been more apologetic about it or am i being a grumpy witch?

If you can be absolubtely clear over what you want - then by all means tell them and ask for it.

Its pretty poor showing from Waitrose mind selling off / dodgy turkeys.

Honestly, I think you're being a bit unreasonable now. You could easily have had all the other food without the turkey, but chose not to. They've given you double your money back, £20 in vouchers and an apology.

It's not really their fault you chose to waste all the other food is it? I think they've been more than reasonable, tbh.

I know it's Christmas lunch but I think Waitrose have behaved pretty reasonably. Exactly how would more compensate you appropriately? It sounds like me that you just want to cause them more hassle rather than actually resolve anything.

What do you want from them?

They can't set the JLP time machine back a few days, they've given you double the price plus £20 which you accepted. If you weren't happy with that then you shouldn't have accepted it.

What exactly are you after from them?

You say the 20 pounds doesn't cover the other food. Would you have had the other food anyway or did you buy it because the turkey was rank? How much would cover the other food?

I'm not usually one to defend corporate giants but the odd bad thing can get through quality control. I doubt Waitrose are being plagued by complaints.

There was nothing to stop you having the roast without the meat was there? It's not like the rest of the food got ruined

I used to work for Waitrose and sadly the under counter time machine units were phased out in 1996. A great shame I feel.

Exactly the same thing happened to us last year with a Waitrose crown.

The manager apologised and gave us a refund and some vouchers by way of compensation. It was certainly a shame, but we were satisfied with the response we got. Asking for even more seems greedy / punitive.

A further, written, complaint may well get you more. But I think you've been decently recompensed.

I think double your money back plus £20 is more than reasonable.

Our turkey didn't defrost in time for Christmas dinner (had use by of 24th so we froze it) so I made the stuffing meat into a meatloaf and we had that with the veg. Nothing wasted.

I think you've been more than suitably compensated and if you do pursue this further you will only come across unreasonable and possibly a bit of a mentalist.

    ??

I agree with Mrs Jess on the trimmings front too, I could happily tuck into pigs in blankets, stuffing, roasties, veg etc. without the need for turkey. In fact, I have done before and much preferred it.

Thanks all, not sure what more they could do TBH, and I was happy with the vouchers. Just that various people around me have suggested going up the food chain further and contacting head office.

I think it was mainly me that was annoyed with lack of turkey on Christmas day - no one else was massively bothered at the time!

    Thanks for the replies.

Perhaps they'd offer you the young duty manager for NY day dinner.

One of my best friends had to complain to Waitrose after they misspelled her name on her wedding cake.

Deliberately withholding video evidence that she actually found it hilarious, she complained that the day had been ruined and got a grovelling apology, a full refund and something like £100 worth of vouchers - but I suspect the wedding element was a significant factor. As was the fact that it was an open-and-shut case that they'd screwed up at their end.

If I'd been your guest I'd have made you cook all the veggies and trimmings! The turkey is my least favourite part of the meal. Hope it didn't all go to waste anyway.

I don't know what more you can expect them to do, I know it was christmas dinner and I'd have been peed off well and truly if it had happened to me but it's just one of those things, like the year the cooker breaks or nana forgets the christmas pudding - you will look back and laugh eventually

Personally I'd have just done the rest of the meal without the turkey and probably wouldn't have even noticed that it was missing.

If you want to take it further you really need to think about what it is that you want them to do. It sounds as though they have been more than reasonable with the compensation they have given you and the fact that you didn't have to fight for it. I'm not sure what more they can do.

That, alongside your 12 yo store manager jibe have really p*ssed me off, actually. I have worked in shops, and been treated like sh*t for it by snooty customers.

Seems like the consensus of opinion on here is that the staff in your local Waitrose behaved perfectly reasonably - and you say you're happy - though I do wonder if that's backtracking after the response? So - if you're happy, and the response is reasonable - maybe don't be so rude about the store staff? They are people too, you know.

I would write to my MP, to Watchdog, trading standards, environmental health, and Gordon Brown. Then I would ring injurylawyers4u and tell them that i wanted one MILLION pounds as compensation for my RUINED Christmas. I d then see a pyschologist for an assessment of the effect not having turkey had on my mental health, and then ad on another half million for the psychological damage caused by this major incident. i d also insist that it was raised in the house of lords, and i d take it to the european court of human rights to enforce my right to have turkey on christmas day and make sure it as enshrined in law, and that the penalty for breaking aid law was death.

    get a grip ffs

This is exactly what I did when my Christmas dinner was ruined because the onions and sprouts I'd bought from Morrisons had gone bad.

Actually, I didn't. I scrounged stuff out of my parents' freezer, moaned to the store afterwards and got a £5 voucher. No-one died because of it - it really wasn't worth any more effort and stress. Neither is your turkey.

You left out picketing Waitrose and every other shop in the John Lewis group (or at the very least releasing bags of live cockroaches into the cold meat counter), hacking their website so that they offer a 99% discount on everything (and free delivery guaranteed within the hour) and possibly firebombing head office.

    Lightweight.
