Walking down the aisle song... help

MrsB2Be, 19 December, 2022 at 14:08 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 4

So me and my partner gave our notice of marriage on Saturday for our wedding in June. The ceremony is classed as a Civil Marriage so we cannot have any songs that mention anything with a religious connotation in the lyrics. Unfortunately, I never planned much into this and when I chose my walking down the aisle song (this was chosen before I even met my partner because I just LOVE the song) it has a verse mentioning Dear God. When this was mentioned I never thought much about it because we're using a piano instrumental so their are no lyrics in the version we are using. The verse mentioning God is also 2 minutes deep into the song so even if it was to have lyrics, the song wouldn't be playing long enough to hear this part. But now we're being told we cannot use itSmiley cry

Being the bride to be I am, I have previously planned everything around this song, including the moments in which me and my bridesmaids will be walking down the aisle. My partner also tears up whenever she hears the song as all she can think about is our future wedding day.

I was just wondering if there was any way around this or if this is an obstical that anyone else has overcome?

The song for reference is Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Ray. As previously stated however we are not using the original version but a piano instrumental.

Any advice would be fantastic because unfortunately my heart is set on this song and no other song ever seems to compare.Smiley cry

I don't think there is any way around it. A civil ceremony cannot contain any religious content, and this song contains clear references to God and Heaven. While I know you are not having the lyrics, I guess the issue is that if an instrumental version of a 'secular' song that mentions God is allowed, you'd then have people requesting instrumental hymn tunes (or carols at Christmas).

Could you have the song played at your reception venue as you walk in? Alternatively, I can't see any reason why you couldn't hear it played outside the ceremony venue and then walk in. I know neither of these options is what you originally wanted, but at least that would be a way of including the song in your day.

I work at a wedding venue and registrars are super strict about these kinds of things, it could also cause issues for the venue and their licensing if they’re seen to break the rules, and worse case scenario the registrars could refuse to continue the ceremony. I think the other comment about finding another way to incorporate the song into your wedding is the safest way to go. You could do a grand entrance into the reception, or have it as your first dance song perhaps?Or if you’re having a videographer they could use this song for the wedding video?
