Warning to all girls buying dresses from US!!

septbride_2008, 22 July, 2008 at 14:59 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi girlies

I ordered my Dessy bridesmaid dresses from houseofbrides.com in April. You may remember me in earlier posts saying how easy it was and what a great job they had done. Well now comes the bad part!!! My six bridesmaid dresses arrived two weeks ago after taking about 12 weeks in all to arrive. They looked in good condition so I was really happy with them. My sister came to try hers on and I had ordered everyone a size too big so they definitely fit, so her size 12 (US size 8) was huge on her and even a size 10 was too big so I was pleased as she is a size 10-12 so I just thought they would need to be taken in which I didnt have a problem with. My H2B's sister came round last night to try her dress on which is a size 16, but couldnt get it on. I thought a bit strange because she is probably between a 16-18 but she couldnt even get it over her head!! She went home devastated and feeling huge and I felt terrible. So I tried the dress on (I am a size 10) and it was skin tight round my hips. I measured it and basically Dessy have made the dress faulty, it is a size 12 bottom on a size 16 top. I called house of brides in the US and basically they told me because I had had them longer than 5 days I was not entitled to a refund. I explained that my H2Bs sister was on holiday so she couldnt try them on within 5 days but they basically have washed their hands of my problem, and said that although the dress is faulty they will not take back or refund. I asked them for Dessys number which they wouldnt give me, and they cannot order me another dress in time as my wedding is in 9 wks and it will take 12 wks to get here. So I am now hugely stressed with no dress for H2Bs sister and probably no chance she can be bridesmaid. I am so upset, surely a faulty dress should not be my problem!! But this is the price I have paid for trying to get dresses cheaper by ordering from the US.

Thought I would share my story as I would never order from the US again (DEFINITELY not House of Brides), no amount of money would tempt me!

xx

Try going to dessy directly with your complaint - or find another retailer in the UK that may be able to help. there is a store finder here: https://dessy.com/storefinder/ you may find that if you ring round there will be the right size and colour somewhere in stock that you can get - if its miles from where you are I'm sure there will be a hitcher nearby who would be willing to pick it up for you and send it on...

Otherwise go through ebay and second hand dress sites and see if you can find the dress to match. If its just the bottom half can it be let out? it may mean adding some extra material but one of the dessy retailers from the above link may be able to help you with matching material. Erm, can't think of anything else! Hope you get it sorted!

I dont think dessy will help as the uk companies are tryign to stop all shipping from the US to the UK and will probably say the same to you as HOB did. find your local dessy stockist and see if they can help i would assume you must have used a local shop as a changing room to try them on to see if they suited before buying from USA so maybe go back there and see if they can do anything to help ,[personally i wouldnt though i would think i wasnt good enough for the original order why should i help now] i dont stock dessy but some suppliers can do a double double rush cut but the dress will cost you double normal uk price if they offer this.

I just read my post back and it sounded horrible and i didnt mean it to sound like that but i know i wouldnt want the added stress at this time of year of a short order dress as its too manic iyswim . i would ring every dessy stockist in the uk and see if they ahve a sample but i also think dessy mark their samples with the word sample too so i dont think this is going to work

I bought one of my bridesmaid dresses from the US (Alfred Angelo) and had no problems, sorry to hear that you are having trouble.

We were told not to go by the sizes but to use the measurements. I had a quick look at the Dessy chart - what size did you order based on that chart? Did you measure her compared to that?

Is it possible to alter the bottom, take it out in any way?

Thanks girls for all of your comments. Texasgirl I used the chart so it was definitely made wrong, hips were 37-38 inches which is between a UK 10-12 so definitely at fault. I have spent the day e mailing 50 stockists of Dessy dresses from their websites, no-one has the dress but will order with no guarantee of it arriving on time and having to pay a fortune for it. Have spoken to Dessy in the US and they were not really interested and told me to take it up with House of Brides and I have already done that but they couldnt care less, but I dont really care as long as I get it sorted! Anyway I spoke to my dressmaker who said if I get some fabric she can make a whole new skirt so I have ordered some from the Dessy website which arrives within 2-3 weeks. Fingers crossed it all works out OK!! xx
