Washing Machine and Dryer recommendations please

I've just had a washing machine disaster, I put the washing on this morning and when I went away I didn't realise the door hadn't shut properly. So 20 minutes later I came back to find the door open with half the load on the floor and the machine washing away merrily with a flood on my floor?.

I've decided I need a new machine and was hoping you lovely people could give me some recommendations. I'm also after a dryer and have been told a seperate one is better, but I need one without the external pipe. Can anyone recommend the Hotpoint Aqualtis and the Ultima for the dryer. Otherwise if you have one that you think is good can you please let me know.

    I've got a miele washing machine. It's amazing. I truly love it, and I know that makes me very sad and slightly pathetic, but I don't care. It'll do a full load, on quick wash, in 20 mins, and it's practically silent.

    Hotpoint tumble dryer, bog standard but it does the job just fine.

    WSS - we have a second hand Miele which is 22 years old and is working perfectly still (although starting to get a bit noisy!)! I would not replace it with anything but another Miele - they have a 5 year warrenty and are designed to last 20 years.

    "Which?" has a 30 day trial for a pound. suggest you join and see what the best buys are. its usually bosch and miele, but the tests are thorough, and the reviews very good.

    We have an AEG. They cost more, but are worth the extra.

    We have a Bosch Exxcel, which rocks and got a Good Housekeeping recommendation, and had the fastest wash (15 minutes at 30C and 800rpm spin, 19 at 40c and 1200rpm). We've a Hotpoint dryer with a sensor thingy, also a GH recommendation.

    If I could have anything, with no budget restrictions, it would indeed be a Miele.

    Ha ha, my washing machine was just making some horrible noises, right after I'd recommended it. However, the recommendation still stands. The noises were down to me putting a bottle of squeezy ketchup and a belt in with the load. There's no accounting for user error.
