wasp stings - vinegar? bicarb? some other such home remedy?

Diamond Star Halo, 21 July, 2008 at 22:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

Mr DSH and I have both been stung by wasps this evening, after uncovering a nest outside our house. My sting isn't that sore, but Mr DSH's is quite painful and swollen. Not scary swollen or anything, but it's bothering him a bit.

I have in my mind some vague memory of being told that you can put vinegar or something on wasp stings (or is that bee stings?). I know wasp stings and bee stings have different remedies. And do you have to do it straight away (if so it's too late - it's well over an hour since we were stung)?

    Vinegar wasps, Bicarb bees.

I'd have thought the sooner the better - but it's still worth a shot. Do you have any piriton? and/or asprin.

Anti histamines and pain killers. Also if you can try and scrub it to get some of the poison out. It really hurts but does help to slow the reaction. That's the advice I got from the walk in centre last year, not sure if that's for all wasp stings or specifically for people with allergies to them.

Lots of sypmpathy, wasp stings are in my top 4 most painful things ever.

Ouch. Wasp stings are buggers. i sympathise.

I got stung twice in one week, on the same arm. Anyone who tells you wasps only sting when provoked are lying. On both the occasions I got stung the wasp just landed on my arm, stung me, and flew off laughing. Malicious little buggers. The first time I just got a swollen lump. The second time (about two days later) my whole upper arm was swollen.

Just a quickie to say thanks for all the advice! Must say that the vinegar did help (at least, I know it helped with mine) and it's not hurt at all today. H's is a bit worse than mine I think but he didn't take my instructions to hold his vinegary paper towel on his hand properly.

Council pest control came out today to destroy the nest, so all is well. H taught me lots about wasps I didn't know (he works in countryside) - apparently, although the adult wasps go around hunting, and stinging other insects to paralyse them, they don't eat them themselves - they take them back to the nest for the larvae to eat, and the larvae then produce a sticky secretion that the adults live on. Very interesting really. And their nest was actually very beautiful inside - all honeycomb-like (except full of larvae ?)
