Wearing a maxi dress as a guest?

Woody13, 18 May, 2013 at 17:38 Posted on Planning 0 16

Aswell as my own wedding this summer I'll also be attending one as a guest. I hate my legs and prefer to wear long dresses to the fitted knee length 'wedding guest' type ones you see in debenhams etc. I'd like to wear a floral maxi like one below but I haven't been to a wedding in a while, will this look odd? Or is wearing a maxi dress quite usual.

Thanks!

I always wear maxi dresses to weddings and so do a lot of people I know.

I love that last one. Where's it from?

I think maxi dresses are fine if they are smart enough and not look like you've just walked off the beach.

    Yes to something like this:

Sorry if the link doesn't work, it never does on my phone.

The dress on the link looks good, but I've stuck to looking at patterns for fear of looking a bit 'bridesmaidy' . Or is that not an issue?

Maxi dresses are, in principle, fine but (to agree with Ducky) it will depend on the style/pattern. Of those pics, I think 1 would be fine, 3 is borderline and 2 far too beachy.

My cousin wore a maxi to our wedding - a lovely turquoise pattern, with a little cardi and wedge sandals!

I think some patterns are fine, as long as the style of the dress is smart rather than casual. But that is rather subjective and everyone will have different ideas on what is smart enough!

Think it depends on what the bride and groom are like

As for me as long as everyone I want and love is there and having a good time I don't care what people wear

At the last wedding I went to there were a few girls in maxi dresses.

I agree with the others though who have said to make sure you don't look like you've just steped off the beach.

We're having a casual wedding so I won't give a monkeys what people are wearing - have they given any indication as to whether its a formal 'do or a bit more casual? I think a maxi dress is fine either way but it might give you an idea of how beach-y you can go with it.

I think the 1st one looks smart enough, can I ask where it is from?

I think that they are all pretty but prefer 1 & 3. To be honest I couldn't have told you what any of my guests wore to either of my weddings. I really am not that observant I was just pleased that they were all there. I did see some girls cominh out of a christening the other weekend in dresses more suitable to go clubbing in though the other Sunday. Sparkly and up to their knickers ? so that may not be a good church wedding look

Maxi dresses are definitely ok for weddings, I like the first one -unusual neckline for a maxi. I think you may need a plain-er one though x

    Hi,

I think it`s a great idea. Guests wore them to my daughter`s wedding last september.

Maybe you might like to take alook at my fascinator website where i have some which would look fab with these dressses.

    Thank you

    Lynne

My cousin wore a maxi to ours and looked a bit out of place IMO. Other guests were far more formal and she looked like she was just off to the beer garden. I think it didn't help she wore them with strappy flat gladiator shoes which made it look far more holiday wear than wedding wear. I would make a maxi more formal with my accessories as a guest.
