Wedding abroad - ideas and avoiding regrets

Kim, 1 March, 2023 at 17:36 Posted on Planning 0 2

Hi everyone,

I'm getting married in April, just me and fiance and we're going abroad to do it. I'd really like advice on things to consider to make sure I have as many memories/keepsakes to remember this as possible. I tend to focus on the practical stuff and then have regrets and I'm really worried because clearly I won't get a second chance at this so don't want to think "I wish I'd"..

to give an example I looked on Etsy and they have these little bottles so I'm going to collect some sand from our beach to bring home. I also thought about whether there's a way to preserve my flowers? Will they keep for 2 weeks? How can I do this practically when abroad and get them or some of them home safely.

Has anyone else gone away as a couple and done this? What did you do to capture as much as possible when you didn't have the help of bridesmaids etc?

Look forward to hearing ideas

Kim

I'm afraid I can't help with marrying abroad but I believe in some countries it's illegal to take sand from their beaches so you might want to check that before you go.

We didn't get married abroad, but I took my bouquet on honeymoon to Cornwall with me and pressed a couple of the flowers to preserve them.

You can get flowers encased in resin to make paperweights, jewelry etc. It might be best to see if you can find someone who does this at your destination, as there will be problems importing live plant material back to the UK, but you should be ok if it's sealed in resin! Plus that would deal with the problem of your bouquet wilting before you can get it preserved as you could send it straight after the wedding.

You can also get things like sand and flowers incorporated into glass - they are burnt up by the process, but leave little bubbles behind. I've had a few beads made with bits of fur from my dog and sand from a beach (you literally only need a few grains, so the bits you bring back on your clothing would be enough). Unfortunately, the lady who made mine now seems to be specialising just in making jewelry from cremated ashes, but I'm sure you can find someone who does something similar out there.

Don't forget the photos of course! And most of all, the memories x
