Wedding at Gretna Green

lady_chilli, 29 April, 2013 at 15:22 Posted on Planning 0 12

Well after a huge upheaval with family over the last two months, we finally decided to cancel our church wedding and reception and have decided to elope to Gretna Green to get married just myself, my finace and our three children with a possible after do for friends and family afterwards.

We booked it this morning and are having our ceremony at the Old Blacksmith's Shop with our wedding meal at the Smith's Hotel and two luxury nights away. I am sooooooooo excited its unreal!!

Has anyone else wed at Gretna or in the midst of planning? Would love to hear of your experiences and plans Smiley smile

My cousin did it- it was lovely, aside from the 8 million tourists gawping. But you get that anywhere open to the public, and they loved the thought of being in tons of people's holiday snaps. Gretna's beautiful!

    Enjoy!!

My best friend got married at Gretna 12 years ago. There was only her, her husband, myself and the Groom's brother there and it was a totally amazing day. I really wanted to have ours there. I'm from Glasgow and H2B is from Northampton where we both now live, it would have been a nice compromise for travelling guests to meet in the middle. It really is a lovely little town. Make sure to visit the shopping outlet village while you're there ?

One of my friends went to Gretna Green to get married last year and did pretty much the same thing as you are planning on doing lady_chilli. They got married at the Famous Blacksmiths Shop and then had their reception at smiths for around 70 people, friends and family. Service was really intimate and one of the reasons she said she picked it was because of all the history and romance associated with Gretna Green! The staff at Smiths Hotel were very helpful as well when she was planning the day and. on the day, the staff in the hotel were very helpful! Me and my girlfriend came for the wedding and we will hopefully be heading back to Smiths sometime!

Hope everything goes well for you Smiley smile

Enjoy yourselves x Not the most useful advice. But if things are going on that are upsetting, use this as a chance to celebrate the good, the joy and those who care x

    Hi

I'm getting married in Gretna Green in November, I have booked the 50 guest package deal at the Smiths Hotel, and am just looking at ways of personalising it. We are getting married at Anvil Hall, then the reception at Smiths. I am so excited, when are you getting married?

Oh Anvil Hall looks gorgeous!! It's now just me and my fiance who are 'romantically eloping' by ourselves and getting married at the Old Blacksmiths Shop Original room with a meal and two night stay at the Smiths! Very excited, we get married on 5th October Smiley smile)

    Hi,

We're getting married the day before you at The Mill Forge. We were planning on it being just us and parents but it's now turned into 50 guests. I'm really excited though, can't wait!

My only concern is flowers. I don't know if I trust the florists there to get what I have in mind right from just a phone call/emails. And I don't want to take flowers from a local florist as we are going up the day before and I don't want them to be wilting by the following afternoon. What are you and the other ladies getting married up there doing about flowers? I don't want table decs or anything like that just my bouquet, my bridemaid's, my daughter's and button holes.

Would be great to hear any suggestions Smiley smile

    Thanks,

My Auntie got married at Gretna the year before last, and the first we knew about it was when we recieved a gorgeous scroll each through the post and a picture, inviting us to their garden party to celebrate their marriage! It was so romantic, and their photos were stunning, she wore a heather coloured bridesmaids dress and they had heather tartan accents everywhere, and heather buttonholes! It really captured the true meaning of marriage, IMO

I'm having fabric bouquets made for me, my bridesmaids and the button holes, I wanted something as a keep sake, will probably have a regular flower bouquet made that I can throw!

    How's everyone's plans going?
