Wedding band/ring stack - is this overkill? What are you all having?

Anonbride, 13 February, 2022 at 09:16 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 8
My engagement ring is an unusual but beautiful oval ruby with diamond cluster surround. I’m wondering whether I could pair it with my grandma’s eternity ring and use this as my wedding band - or whether it’s a bit too much and I should be looking for something simpler.

The eternity band is far to big for me (I have unusually thin fingers!!), so I was thinking of asking them to thin out the gold so the band is as thin as possible. The diamonds are big, so I was thinking of asking them to remove one and it be a four stone ring (my engagement ring sitting centrally would become the aesthetically pleasing odd number). If I did this I’d be tempted to ask them to turn the removed diamond into a necklace so I didn’t just lose it.

What do you think? Does it work or is it a bit much for a wedding band?

What’s everyone else going for as their ring stack?

If you like it then go for it, it’s nice that it would be extra sentimental to you. Your engagement ring is also lovely, i am a big fan of coloured stones.

I haven’t gotten my ring yet but my engagement band is quite narrow so I am planning on going just for a simple plain band of a similar thickness for my wedding ring. So then my wedding ring is something I could keep on in the gym/at the beach etc.

Aww thank you - I do love having a colour over a traditional diamond personally 🙂

My engagement band is narrow too… that’s what’s got me unsure! The sentimental element is what’s drawing me to this, but I also want to feel like both rings “go” and FH is unsure whether the diamonds being so much bigger is a problem or if that’s just something that tends to happen when you have a cluster ring.
You make a really good point about being able to keep it on at the gym etc.! I’ve got in the habit of taking my ring on and off but I suppose it is nice to feel like your wedding band is immovable! 🤔

I'd start off by talking to a jeweler for advice - they'll know what alterations will work and what won't. Also, think about durability, your lifestyle and how much you want to be able to wear your wedding ring. I do a manual job and didn't want to have to take my wedding ring off ever, so I knew a plain band was the only option for me. If you don't want to wear your wedding ring constantly, or if you have the kind of lifestyle where it won't get bashed around too much, then it would be ok.

Another alternative would be to get a plain band for your wedding ring and use your grandmother's as a RHR - maybe even wearing it on your wedding day as part of your wedding jewelry.

As far as looks go - I think it's fine, but yours is the only opinion that really matters, as you are the one wearing (or not wearing) the set.

I'm not too worried about the durability element - I'm an editor so I'm not too worried about damaging the ring day-to-day - but it's a good point Smiley smile

Having it resized just as a separate ring is my back up plan!

I'm finding it really hard to find examples of engagement rings that are the same shape as mine to work out what looks 'right' (I know I'm blinkered by sentiment with this one haha) which is why I was asking for opinions on here!

I agree with other people who have commented, it’s totally your decision! My engagement ring is a unique shape too and it’s so hard to find a band that fits! I’m having a band moulded to fit it perfectly, so it will be snug and not too stacked on my finger, many jewellers do this and it’s usually only £50 more on top of the band to be done Smiley smile

Oooh that's interesting - so you pick the band that you like regardless and then they shape it?

Yep!! My engagement ring is from a company called Fenton and I’m going to them for a custom band, plain white gold is £495 and small diamonds across the front is £795, so not too pricy!!

That's so good to know, thank you for sharing! I feel like everyone talks so much about engagement rings that I'm completely in the dark when it comes to the wedding band haha
