wedding cake

Miss-KEM, 3 June, 2015 at 08:37 Posted on Planning 0 19

My biggest problem so far is finding a wedding cake. I'm not wanting anything too ott just something quite simple - 3 or 4 tiers with maybe a few flowers. The prices i've been quoted seem a bit much. i've looked at both professional cake shops and those who work from home.

just wondering what everyone else has done about cakes and what I should be looking at paying?

Thanks

We are having a four tiered sponge cake of choc lemon and vanilla. Simple in colours white pink and gold. Ours is around £350 but we have two layers that are double barrelled. We also have gold leaf which itself was around £20 and are also hiring a cake stand. We also got 10% off. I think if we didn't have all those included and was plain colours and no extra height it would be around £250-280. This is someone who bakes from home but does wedding regular and attends wedding fairs.

Ours is about £330 going on what they told us, that's with 10% off.

Why not try Marks and Spencer or Waitrose? They do cakes, and you could always just buy a nice topper or something to put on it? You could also go for a smaller cake and just buy the cutting bars to make up the extra portions.

Seriously try some of the supermarkets! You will be surprised at what you can get!

This M&S one is 3 tier sponge for £179. You would just need to buy the flowers! http://www.marksandspencer.com/romantic-pearl-sponge-wedding-cake-white-icing-/p/p21038145

Asda do a 3 tier fruit cake for £35!! http://groceries.asda.com/product/party-cakes/asda-extra-special-3tier-occasion-fruit-cake/910001954247

Sainsburys do 3 different size tiers, the most expensive being the extra large at £35! http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/celebration-cakes/sainsburys-celebration-iced-fruit-cake-x-large--taste-the-difference

Or if you know someone in your family that is good at baking (Mum, MIL2B, Grandma, Auntie Ethal!) they should be able to do a simple sponge or fruit cake and ice it with ready rolled icing, maybe ask them to do it as a favour but you will pay for the supplies?

Have you considered a cupcake tower for your cake? That's another option!

M&S cakes always go down well.

If you're not massively fussed about a wedding cake, don't feel obligated to have one. There are lots of alternatives these day.

Cakes made of cheese, pork pie wedding cakes, pizza wedding cakes- Krispy Kreme towers! Cupcakes and dessert tables are also popular choices. Then you can always purchase a single tier to cut if that was something you were worried about ?

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Have considered the m and s ones which is looking like the most likely option so far. Just wondering what does everyone do about getting their cake to the venue? Do most venues let you take them the day before the wedding? Not sure there would be anyone to take it the day of the wedding.

We had the M& S romantic pearl one with the mix of fruit, chocolate and sponge. We delivered it to the venue the day before and they assembled it on the morning. My florist then added flowers and a 'just married' bunting cake topper. Looked pretty, tasted delicious and it was super reasonable price wise.

Can try and dig out a pic if it helps?

Here you go... hopefully this works. This was a photo taking on the morning, the flowers had just been placed here and were put a little neater later in the day but you get the idea. Sorry if the pic is huge!

Just to second the M & S option as that is what we will be going for with fresh flowers on top. They are now doing samplers again at £4 each if you want to try before you buy. M & S also have a video on their website on how to put the tiers together if you have to do it yourself.

Love&Lavender - your photo is lovely and reinforces our decision to go for a M & S cake ?

Good choice. I've never tried an M&S wedding cake but every other cake of theirs I've had has been lovely. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

We also had the romantic pearl wedding cake for our wedding in April. We had the assorted one and all 3 flavours tasted delicious, we changed the ribbon and added a cake topper. Photo is one a guest took after we cut it so excuse the quality.

We're thinking we'll do m and s cake, get a couple of layers with a nice topper and bit of ribbon round, job done. We'll then get some blocks of cake too to cut the for people to eat in the evening. the cake needs to be cut before the guests come in the evening so no point buying bigger cake when most of our guests won't see the thing!! Should then cost about £130 for whole thing. :-)

We're paying £110 for a four tier cake (12,10,8, and 6 inches) fruit, chocolate, lemon, and carrot.

That is for plain flat white iced because we have someone else decorating it for free.

Our cake maker works from home and she made me a small chocolate cake to taste test. It was gorgeous.

I'm planning on making my own cake/cupcakes (I must be mad!) but I have a bakery lined up just in case it's too hard. I'll be doing a practice run soon and then can get them booked at the 12 month mark or so.

Neither me or FH like traditional fruit cake that much so we're going for chocolate, makes it much simpler and cheaper to get a cake! We'll just put our toppers on top of it (where else!) and it'll be a wedding cake Smiley smile

    Maybe one like this!

Price completely depends on what you're looking for from your wedding cake. For us it can be any old cake, but it does get more expensive to have the tradition white iced cakes, particularly if you're getting a professionally made one with all the decorating!

Another vote for the M&S wedding cake here too, my friend had it at her wedding and it was tasty.

Our venue lets us drop everything off the day before but we are close by so will just drop it off in the morning
