wedding cake costs!

tash&ste, 14 June, 2015 at 12:24 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi all.

So, we were originally planning to just buy 3 m&s tiers and stack them ourselves but I've been thinking so much about my dream cake so I got in touch with a cake maker who has quoted me £375 for a 3 tiered cake with different flavours. This includes delivery and set up. It's about £275 over what we'd pay for a cake from m&s! I'm torn! The marks tiers are traditional, whereas my dream cake is, well, totally different:

I'm thinking about it. I need to make a decision quite quickly though! Is £375 a lot or quite good? What's everyone else having/paying?

£375 sounds very reasonable to me. When you add up the man hours and the fuel costs, that's a really good price.

    Yeah I think that's a reasonable price.

I'm having a chocolate M&S cake because the cake isn't really important to me but actually I think the one we're getting is really nice. It's going to cost £250 for 110 portions.

Well call me crazy but im making it myself ? Im doing a single tier traditional fruit cake-because its my favourite and a 3 tier sponge cake decorated with fresh fruit for the reception party: i wanted to do it myself partly because of budget but also because i enjoy baking. £375 seems a lot of money to me personally but this may be a standard price-im sure someone will know? i would stick with the m&s and decorate it yourself-you can buy some really lovely sugar flowers these days (even online) and there is loads of cake decorating tips and videos online as well? x

I think that sounds about right. We're having something similar and all of our quotes were around £350.

We're paying £110 for 4 layers - fruit, chocolate, lemon and carrot. They will just be flat white iced as we have a friend decorating it for free.

We found our cake maker by asking around - she's not a full-time cake maker but does make beautiful cakes. she made me a chocolate taster and it was gorgeous. If you think outside the box when it comes to suppliers you can save a lot of money - I have a vintage 1953 ford popular as my wedding car for £50 and a vintage vwcamper for the bridemaids for £75. All by asking around amongst friends etc.

The cake situation as been my biggest problem so far. Had a lot of quotes ranging from £450-£650 and just couldn't justify the cost. OH had his heart set on a cake we saw at a wedding fayre but it was going to cost about £500. I decided on a diy cake from m & s after numerous recommendations on here. However, over the weekend OH has mentioned this other cake again. Have asked about over the weekend and found someone who can do it for about £300. Its not my cup of tea however OH loves it and its the only thing he's really asked for so i've said we will get it. If your budget can stretch to it then go for your dream cake you'll only regret it if you don't.

Could you not buy some extras yourself to add to the M&S cake to make it better? Like sugar roses, cake topper, bunting etc? It might only add up to £50 but would help make the M&S cake closer to your 'dream'?

Hey, not sure how much this will help you - I am a cake maker, and have made quite a few wedding cakes in the past. (I won't be doing my own, I couldn't deal with that stress, hehe!) - I was asked a while ago if I would be happy to decorate a pre-made M&S cake which I was originally fine with until I looked at the sizes of the M&S cakes. It might be personal preference but for me, a wedding cake needs to have depth, and indeed in the photo of the cake you like which you've been quoted for, the tiers are about 4-5" tall (which is about normal for wedding cakes). When I checked out the M&S tiers, they were literally half that depth. It might not be such a huge deal for you, but I guess I'm more picky as I do make cakes and am therefore a bit of a cake snob Smiley winking I think £375 is a great price - we are paying £475 for ours but that's because I was so so so picky and had in my mind an exact image of the cake I wanted! I love this cake you've posted a picture of. Personally I would go for it but it totally depends on how much of a big deal the cake is to you - for some it isn't much of an issue, for others (me!) it means a lot!!

    We paid £250 for this:

We had 1 layer chocolate, 1 layer normal vanilla sponge and 1 layer carrot cake (which was amazing!).

I totally agree with what you're saying about depth. Only one of my close friends is married and she must have said to me half a dozen times "you should get xx who did our cake to do yours, she's amazing" - but I hated her cake because they were teeny tiny layers, no depth, so the whole thing looked underwhelming. So I just went ahead and booked someone else, then said friend was going "but she's really expensive, you should have got xx who did our cake...!"

We're paying £476 for our cake, which is 4 square tiers (14, 12, 10 and 8 inches) and 4 different flavours, the largest being fruit. Our supplier has done loads of weddings and does really deep tiers. It's a lot of money but it's going to have the wow factor - plus it will feed over 200 people. It depends how important cake is to you when it comes to what you spend, we're a family of bakers (professional and hobby) so cake is pretty important.

I'm having a 3 tier M&S cake for mine and decorating it with a cake topper in matching flowers to my bouquet and purple ribbon to replace the ribbon it's supplied with. Hopefully it'll look great.

We're paying £485 for 3 tiers in Kent, so I think £375 is a good price. When you consider that it will be your dream cake with your own choice of flavours, plus will have more depth compared to the M&S cake as someone has previously mentioned, plus they will deliver and set it up (giving you one less thing to organise), I would go for it.
