Wedding cake help!

Jess, 30 November, 2020 at 13:52 Posted on Planning 0 6
Hello! We have just booked our wedding cake but I’m unsure if to go for 2 tier or 3! We are only having 35 day guests so we would probably be fine with 2 but I’m not sure if 3 looks more ‘ wedding cake ‘ like and could we have it in the evening instead of the day or serve it throughout ?

I think two tier will look just a weddingy as 3 or 4.

As for serving it, I can not remember the last time I photographed a wedding cake cut at the traditional time - straight after the meal. Its now done on or to the side of the dance floor in the evening just before the first dance and that way the evening guests get to be a part of it. People gather to see it cut and then they are already there for the first dance and if gives a nice joined up flow to it.

The cake then usually makes an appearance cut up and ready to be served with the evening buffet, between 8.30 and 9.00.

That sounds more ideal , we’re not aiming for a traditional day anyway and I want our evening guests to feel as much of a part of the wedding as possible ! The only problem is the OH thinks 2 tiers won’t be enough for 60 guests , although I definitely think he’s thinking more of enough for himself!?

Ask your cake maker if you have one, what they recommend. Do a 3rd tier just big enough for one and put his name on it Smiley xd

They say 2 tier will serve 6 but I suppose everyone’s serving size is different , he would love that ?

Check the sizing. I have been throught he whole cake thing lately. My fiance wanted a good size piece of cake too ?. Often sizes are 1x1x4(or some do 5 inches high but obviously pricier), which he felt were tiny. So they are more like finger pieces than slices of cake. We are having ours instead of the dessert course so opted for bigger pieces of 1x2x4. Ask the size of tiers (its a big difference whether the bottom tier is 10 or 12 inches wide etc.) and the portion size they use to calculate. That will give you a better idea to compared/ see if you are happy with it. We are looking at a 4 tier cake for 80 dessert portions, but the top tier is small (4 inches)so more like a backup as we rather have some spare/ left for evening guests than run out (or we can have it the next day as a treat if leftover ?). If finger portions then most cake makers said 3 tiers would have been fine for 80... hope you find a lovely cake

That’s a good idea ,my fiancé would be appalled if I suggest just cake and no dessert ? for a 2 tier it would be 6” & 8” or 4”,6”&8” for 3 tier , I think we are going to end up going for the 3 tier as well had our samples yesterday and my fiancé would have a tier of each if possible ? thank you I hope you love yours too!
