Wedding cake help required!

Gemma, 18 August, 2021 at 13:35 Posted on Planning 0 6
Afternoon :-)

We're getting married on 18/11/2022 in Gretna Green - not an elopement but only a small number of family friends. Everything is pretty much sorted - except the cake. Apparently, I've already left it too late as I've contacted a number of cake makers local to the venue and they don't have any availability for our date. I'm nervous about getting a cake locally (Leicestershire) and transporting with us so was wondering if anyone in here (hive mind is better than one!) had any knowledge of cake makers that might deliver to Gretna Hall please

Would you consider a supermarket cake? A number of mainstream supermarkets do 'wedding cakes'. You won't get them decorated to the same high standard as you would from a professional cake maker, but you could buy a fancy topper to go on top to customise it instead - this is what we did. That way, you can pick it up fairly locally.

Otherwise, get a single layer cake and transport it in a rigid cake box on the floor of the car - get one of those boxes which is like a cake cover clipped onto a plate, so you just lift the cover off the cake instead of having to lift the cake out of the box. If the cake is a close fit to the box and the box is well wedged in place, it should be fine.

I have started looking into that option - was just nervous around the transportation of it - I am notoriously clumsy! It was more for the symbolism than for the cake itself so it probably makes the most sense at this stage. Just never considered there would already be no availability 🤦🏻‍♀️

    Hi!!
I’m also getting married at Gretna. I’m having a brownie stack rather than a traditional cake so it can be assembled when I’m there. I thought it was a quirky alternative to tradition. I’m going to put some flowers on to decorate.
Good luck with your plans! I’m so excited about Gretna xx

Can you put a trusted friend or family member in charge of it? You shouldn't be having to worry about it yourself on your wedding day!

And if it does get a bit battered on the journey it will still taste ok and just be a funny story to tell in the future.

Have you asked bakers for just ‘a cake’ without prefacing it with ‘wedding’? I genuinely wonder how much an impact that would have on availability especially if you’re not after anything crazy.

I cant really help with people who could make one or anything but if you have a friend whos good at cakes.. or end up making one yourself? In terms of transportation, if its going to be a tiered cake, you can transport and layer to the venue. Should make it easier to transport. Basically there are supports within the cake that support the shape & weight when layering so if you have those in the individual cakes boxed, you can transport them up with a little less stress and then layer them at the venue. Should be less stressful although I can imagine still a bit stressful at the same time. Fingers crossed you get it sorted.
