Wedding cake or Not?

Emilyt, 3 November, 2022 at 21:37 Posted on Planning 0 13
I am unsure on whether to have a wedding cake or something alternative. I'm not a huge fan of wedding cakes normally, and I am trying to keep my wedding under a tight(ish) budget. For me cake isn't a massive deal breaker but I want SOMETHING.
Could I see some people's cakes/desert tables etc please? And also how much people roughly spent/budgeted for cake type things?
Thank you so much x

I was the same as you and didn't want to spend loads. Looked a t a cheese cake, but was so expensive and we thought we could do our own by going to Costco and buying a load of cheese but venue wouldn't allow it due to food safety regs as they wanted insurance certificate, which of course we didn't have! so we ended up just doing cupcakes and a small topper, was £200 from a local lady

Our colour theme was pastel rainbow so it really worked for us and tied it all together a sour venue was simple and white and then just had pops of colour in cake, dresses and table decs x

We’re just having cupcakes. 72 in total; 24 x chocolate, 24 x carrot and 24 x piña colada flavoured. They’re charging £2.50 per cupcake, £40 delivery and £30 to hire the stand so spent £250 🧁

If your venue will allow, you can get a supermarket wedding cake which is much cheaper than one from a specialist baker. Or go for lots of little cakes or profiteroles or something like that. If you can splash out on a custom cake topper, it will make even the most basic cake look amazing. We bought a silhouette one of us with our dog, and we are reusing it each year on our anniversary cake. (As you might be able to tell, we are huge cake fans, so definitely not limiting ourselves to having one JUST for our wedding!!!!)

We had a cake of cheese. Venue provided crackers, chutney etc so it formed part of the evening food

We bought cupcakes for ours and made our stand - cupcakes doubled up as favours too and went down an absolute treat! Bought ours from a professional cake company and only spent about £3-4 per cupcake (£200-300 total) as had plain and detailed mix. You can buy pretty cupcake boxes on Amazon and some personalised labels from Zazzle if you have money left in your budget. No one missed cake cutting; more time to party and relax! We've decided to go for Collin the Caterpillar wedding cakes! You can order them from M&S, I believe they are around £40 each, we are going to buy the little Caterpillar cakes too. I believe each big Caterpillar cake serves around 40/50 people! We also didn't want to spend too much money, I was actually quoted £600 for a wedding cake so I'm quite happy with this idea instead 😊

We was stuck between having a cake or not! But our venue suggested an alternative to cake which was a cheese board. It looked lovely and we was really keen on the idea. However we seen a cake maker who makes raspberry ripple cake and we couldn't resist!
Have you looked at donut stands instead, I'm sure I've seen people buy the big packs from asda (£2) maybe and add them to a tiered cake stand. Have a googe looks amazing and maybe a cheap alternative to a cake!

We had a cheese cake! Was £250 and formed a big part of our evening food (plus we had lots of yummy cheese to eat after the wedding). It went down really well and, for those with a sweet tooth, we went to Costco for macarons and brownies.

Were opting for a single Victoria sponge with lots of different mini cakes all around, a friend of ours is making a cake tree where there will be different levels of cakes with grapes, strawberries etc scattered all around, try not to overthink it, make it personal for you. we wanted our wedding theme to be quintessentially British, many of our guests will be coming from other countries so we wanted them to experience a "slice" of our home.
