Wedding cake storage/decoration

Potter&Me, 5 July, 2016 at 22:24 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi! We're going to be having the M&S sponge cake (Royal icing) which you buy as an individual tiers to stack yourself. I was thinking it would be best to transport the cake in the boxes the tiers arrive in and stack at the venue, however it's at a hotel we're going to arrive the day before the ceremony and have a bit more time there. I have bought edible butterflies which I will stick onto the cake with edible glue but I'm not sure what stage to do this?

Can anyone advise how long a cake can be sat out for?- I don't really want to be decorating the cake on the Saturday and so unsure if I can stack and decorate it on Friday without a container big enough to put it in over night.

Or am I best off decorating the tiers individually, putting the tiers back in the boxes they came in, hoping not to damage the butterflies and then stack and leave out on the day of the wedding only?

thanks!

Have you asked your venue about storage options?

I am worrying about this too and its on the list of things to ask at our next wedding appointment with the venue - I am making my own cake but would like as much done in advance as possible rather than putting it together on the morning of!

Hopefully your venue can store your cake in their fridge overnight ?

We're getting a tier from the M&S wedding cakes, but we're having fruit cake instead of sponge - I know that the consume by on that one is 14 days, and I think the sponge is 5 days? To be honest, I don't see why you couldn't assemble it all the night before and then perhaps store in a venue chiller or seperate room?

Leaving them out will be no different than putting them back in the boxes- they'll be open/not as air tight (are cardboard boxes even airtight?) - so I don't think it will matter.

Our hotel has a full room that is chilled which I can store all the cakes in. Have you had a word with your venue about what they would recommend? I'm sure they're use to this all the time.

    Hi.

We are also buying our cake from M&S (3 tier black and ivory.) I've been told they come in cardboard boxes so i don't think it would make much difference because they won't be air tight. I think royal icing is pretty sturdy stuff as long as it's not unbearably sweltering.

I was thinking of stacking mine at home for a quick drop off to my venue because I'm going to be in full headless chicken mode in the morning.

My only problem is trying to find out how big the board is on the bottom tier of the cake so that i can find a box wide enough to transport it in. M&S have been really unhelpful and after speaking to 7 different customer service members I'm still clueless.

Our caterers have asked us to drop ours off the morning of the wedding, & they'll store it in their chiller trailer & put it out for us - we're still not entirely sure what we'll have though (OH's dad is making it!), so hopefully it won't melt if the marquee gets too hot during the afternoon!

Maybe the catering team at your venue would assemble it if you told them how you wanted it?
