Wedding cakes - stacked or tiered circles or squares?

Karen1980, 23 September, 2009 at 09:11 Posted on Planning 0 18

What are people having with regards to wedding cakes?
3 circles stacked or 3 circles tiered?
Are there many brides having square cakes either sdtacked or tiered?
Thanks!

I am having a 4 tier cake, with circle cakes stacked on top of each other. Each tier will be a different flavour.

I wouldn't be against a square cake. I think they are very modern.

Getting my mum to do it for me.

This is similar, but pink ribbons, etc.

After seeing a heart shaped cake on Don't Tell The Bride last night I am really liking that idea, but stacked not tiered.

I was planning a 2 tier stacked cake (bottom fruit tier made by my Mam, top sponge layer and decorated by his Mam) but after a visit there this weekend we've decided on 3 tiers stacked (top 2 sponge). She happened to have 3 cake tins all ready and D decided it looked nicer in a stack of 3 ?

I want it really plain just with ribbon round (probably pink since that's my colour of choice) and maybe some nice pink gerberas (my flower of choice!)

I got very excited when I saw the tins stacked up! Haha!

This is ours but just without the bobbles... we'll be having fresh pink orchids cascading down the side, the flavours being lemon and chocolate ganache (separate tiers of course!)

My mum is making my cake and wanted to make on very traditional square with royal icing!! Ive steered her away as I like the soft icing but she does like square cakes and I quite like them too.
    Circular seems more popular though!
Which one is more traditional? does anyone know?
She wants to have the struts and not stack but i think this could be an issue for setting up on the day.
Going to talk to the venue about it as worried it wouldnt get set up properly etc..

We are having square, I can't find the picture anywhere on the net, but it will be 3 tiers - stacked and not seperated by pillars or anything. The squares will be set back into one corner so you get steps mainly on 2 sides (IYKWIM) and then sugar roses which start at the top and cascade down the opposite corner to where the squares set back into.

I think square cakes are lovely and much more unusual. You also get less wastage with a square cake.

The first thing they do in the kitchen is cut a round cake into a square and throw the edges away - makes it easier and quicker to cut! (If I'm around, I eat the edges because I prefer the icing to the cake!)

Stacked are more difficult to transport and can be really heavy, so it's usually better to stack it at the venue. There are more choices of shapes and design if you go for a 3 tier stand - 'E' shape, 'S' shape, swan, staggered..........

We were going to have the same as December's (cupcakes with a cake on top) but I have since had a new idea which I think would be nice and easier to make in advance (as I'm making my own) - mini sponge cakes with some sort of frosting, something like this but with a different decoration - not sure how we're displaying them yet...

    Cigarillo cakes

    Cupcakes

    Suitcase cakes

I was thinking 3 round cakes stacked for mine but haven't ordered anything yet and TBH haven't spent much time looking at what I think I might like. Therefore, this might change!!!!!

This is really interesting as I orignally said I didnt want to spend money on a cake, and wanted something cheap and simple(im not that fussed on cake). This week I started to think about it and what I REALLY like - at thats CHOCOLATE. Now Im going to look into one/two or three big, fat, sickly, gooey chocolately chocolate cakes, and stand them on my grandmas head if I have to. Watch this space, it could be interesting (or I stick with M&S)

I'm having three stacked suitcases as OH and I spend most of our lives living out of the things visiting each other.

With the M&S ones you have to put dowels into the cake which then gives the pillars some foundation so they don't collapse. HTH

I want something quite plain just with blu riboon round the bottom of each tier. we are having 3 tiers and having circles, on one of those stands where the cakes are seperated and graduate don. was going to have them stacked, but told OH he can do what he likes with the cakes as that is his input into the wedding, and he chose soem thing like this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-Tier-Offset-Bright-Chrome-Wedding-Cake-Stand_W0QQitemZ350254214742QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUk_Crafts_Cake_Decorating_MJ?hash=item518cc72e56&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

with a bride and groom on top cake and poss some flowers to match the others on the top of the other two cakes. its a working progress at the mo, but they are ging to practice making a fruit cake and a sponge this weekend, so might have cake to eat next week!
