Wedding Dress help needed - about to have a breakdown.

Lei, 31 May, 2023 at 16:40 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 3

I bought my wedding dress at the beginning of the year and had to have it sent back a few times for added support around the bust and shoulders. On the last return I was asked if the length was alright and I [stupidly] said yes without thinking about how I was going to actually walk in the damned thing.

I took my dress to a seamstress who quoted £400 to shorten it [due to the beading and general thickness of the layers]. I can't afford £400 to shorten a dress so I tried a crinoline hoping it would push the material away from my feet. Unfortunately the dress is too heavy and the crinoline is absolutely useless.

I'm really stressing now that I won't be able to move in this dress [or dance] and I don't know what to do. I've messaged the dress maker in the hopes she can do the alteration for me cheaper but it's been months and I'm guessing she is going to say there is not much she can do now.

Has anyone got any advice or anything that could possibly help?

Try looking for another seamstress. My seamstress charged less than £200 to shorten my dress and adjust the shoulder straps and add a bustle point. I'm sure you can find cheaper. Good luck.

Try shopping around for quotes to see if you can get it altered more cheaply.

Alternatively, would you consider wearing it long for the ceremony and buying a cheaper dress for the evening reception? It might work out cheaper to buy a second dress, maybe second-hand or from a high street store (especially if you pick a style that doesn't need to be very fitted, so doesn't need alteration) than to pay for alterations to this one. I couldn't get my dress shortened before our wedding due to Covid restrictions, so it was more than touching the ground, but I managed for our ceremony and photos by walking slowly and carefully!!!
