So, I got married abroad and had my dress drycleaned while on honeymoon. It was the only way I could ensure it would be clean in time for a second reception which we're having tomorrow.
I knew the dress didn't look or feel right (crimpled and bright) when I got it back from the cleaners, but didn't want to have to consider the idea that it might be damaged so put it to the back of my mind until I got home. I hoped that getting it steamed would fix it. I emailed the dress shop where I bought it (The Bridal Chest in Eltham) and Adile agreed to have a look at it for me this week. She had to totally undo the rouching, steam it and restitch it!
I went in to pick it up from her today and she described the dress as "ruined". The drycleaners used too hot a process for the silk and the silk has shrunk a little and lost a lot of that lovely light refraction that you get with silk. It seems almost shiney and is definitely a whiter colour than I remember it being! As the silk has shrunk, the hem is now longer than the dress and I'm going to have to pin if from the inside tomorrow.
I'm obviously upset that this has happened to my dress! But at least, I had my big day in it already and have loads of great memories and photos. It's going to be strange wearing it tomorrow though. For a lot of our friends and family who weren't at our ceremony a few weeks ago, the reception tomorrow is the wedding! I don't know how I'm going to react when people start complimenting me on the dress (tbh, I don't even know how well it'll fit me! I did have a little extra room in it on the wedding day, so hope the shrinking hasn't tightened too much).
I also don't know what to do about the drycleaners in Barbados. I will write to them to complain, but what are my chances of getting any of my money back? Normally, are you entitled to compensation or anything? I did have wedding insurance. In fact, we got out 2 policys - one for Vegas and one for the London reception. I have no idea if having your dress ruined after the event would be something I could claim - especially as I'm going to wear it tomorrow (no choice really!)
I have thought of a positive thing out of all this though. At least now I don't have to worry too much about what I'm going to do with the dress. If it was still in good condition, I'd be careful of it and feel I had to store it well and look after it. Now that it's pretty much ruined, I can be a lot freer about what I'm going to do with it. One of my best friends is trying to start up a wedding photography business. For a start, I can maybe do a trash the dress shoot with her to bulk out her portfolio (and for a laugh for me). Also, breast cancer has been an issue for me recently with a schoolfriend and an aunt both undergoing treatment at the moment. I'm thinking that maybe I could do a charity fun run in my wedding dress when the next one rolls around.
I'm really trying hard to focus on these not so bad bits! At least until tomorrow is over.
Any advice on how to proceed regarding complaints etc would be greatly appreciated!! Please keep your fingers crossed that the dress is okay to wear tomorrow!
