Wedding Dresses - 50s style/Vintage Recommendations please!

Arpee, 7 May, 2015 at 10:48 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi ladies,

I've started looking at dresses and am struggling to find what I want. I want a 50s style tea length dress with lots of petticoats underneath, but dresses like that seem to only have one or two styles of bodice, and not the one I'm looking for. If you know of any designers/shops/websites that sell these sorts of dresses, could you list them below please?

I already know of:

Honeypie Boutique
Oh My Honey
Vivien of Holloway
Hopelessly Devoted Vintage
Candy Anthony
Polka Dot Polly
Loulou Bridal
House of Mooshki
Kitty and Dulcie
RitaMae
Honeybomb Vintage Wedding Boutique

Happy to travel a reasonable distance to visit independent shops, based in Gloucester so anywhere around Bristol, Cardiff, London and Oxford is good, plus my parents live in Manchester so could easily get there, or travel to Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield etc.

Thank you!!!

Not sure if they'll have what you're after but Fur Coat No Knickers make vintage/50's style dresses.

I have a lady who has made me two 50's style dresses who I know makes bridesmaids dresses in that style- her shop is called CyanideKiss and both dresses were £50 each, made to measure, and were absolutely amazing. One was a Marvel fabric with all superheros on, one was a Jade/ Emerald green for Xmas party. So great!

I'll be getting her to make me dresses again in the future.

My dress is a 50s style tea length with petticoats - it's from Forget me Not. They are based on the Isle of Wight but have a few stockists around, got mine from Altrincham. They are made to measure, so can do custom alterations but not sure if you'd need to go to IoW direct to sort that. Good luck!

What sort of thing are you looking for? A couple of our hitched girls have shorter dresses from bridal boutiques that don't specialise too.

I was on the verge of going to fur coat no knickers and I know someone who got a beautiful dress made from there. They do actually have some vintage dresses if you are teeny (sizes 6-10) but they make them too.

But in the end I got lucky at a sample sale with a dress that was full length, and I just had it cut to ballerina length (calf length) by a seamstress. It is worth remembering that most dresses are made to be taken up anyway, for shorter brides. Even the ones with a lace overlay - the trim is easily detachable.

So I just got them to bring it up even more and add another skirt underneath.

maybe we should start a thread for tea-length brides!

I wasn't necessarily trying to go for a fifties vibe, I just didn't want to have to hoik my dress around with me all day!

I've said from the off that I'm going to have a tea-length, or calf length dress - it's much more me!

I have such a tight budget though (only about £300) that I'm kind of relying on being able to find one at an outlet or sample sale Smiley sad which seems unlikely.

I really wanted a 50's style dress. Originally wanted a Vivien of Holloway but something wasn't quite right. Was then going to get one from Honeypie boutique but again, couldn't put my finger on it. I've now seen this bridesmaids dress from Alfred Angelo and NEED to try it on.

It's not quite what I thought I'd go for but I've fallen in love! Don't limit yourself to places that specialise is basically what I'm trying to say!

Yep that's tough. My budget was £400 but I had to stretch to £800. You would think shorter dresses would be cheaper! Not the case. I do think they are becoming more popular though so hopefully you will have more luck than me.

Also I think you have time to hunt around for a bargain. I have noticed some bridal shops advertise their samples on pre-loved. It's worth setting up an alert or something on there.

Inspyre that's lovely! Good thinking to look at BM dresses! Part of the problem with the short dresses is finding somewhere to try them.

Have you tried the couture company in birmingham, if you google them the website is worth a look.

Inspyre that dress is gorgeous! Good point about bridesmaids dresses, they come in so many different colours including white, ivory, blush etc.

Chucklevision, that's the first time I've seen your dress!! Gorgeous :-)

Ladies, thank you so much for this. CV, I pinned your dress to my Pinterest board last year! Saw your flash, it looks fab!

And Catshoes, yours is the closest thing to perfection that I've found! That's the sort of bodice I'd like, a V-neck with a covered back, lots of lace. I just need to go and try one on now!

I've bookmarked a few others too, on the basis that they can be shortened or embellished, so thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I feel much more positive about the dress now!
