As we are not having our Wedding Breakfast until 6pm, we will be having the "buffet" quite late, so we have decided to have Bacon and Sausage Butties. My friend had these at her wedding last year and after a few drinks these went down really well, so we thought we would do the same

Hi, welcome to Hitched. I am also a 2010 bride.

Are you thinking of getting someone in to do the catering or having family or friends doing it? If you are trying to keep it cheap and have people who can cook it for you, then places like Waitrose & M&S do excellent ranges of food for large parties/weddings etc.

It really depends on if you're having a sit down meal or buffet earlier in the day and for how many people, or whether that's the only catering you're doing.

We had a 3 course sit down for 50, then an evening buffet of classic but posh party food for a further 50 so it was important it was fairly substantial for our evening only guests.

I'd discuss options and costs with your caterer whether in house or bought in.

Thanks for the ideas we have found somewhere that do bacon and sausages butties and are awaiting a quote so that mayb an option... I will also give M and S at look to see if they do food that comes already cooked etc...

We think that we will have to get somebody in as it will be too much to do it ourselves and the town hall where we are having our reception do not have an inhouse caterer... when we have had parties etc before we have always done it ourselves i think that is why we are so stuck for ideas and can not believe how much per head these caterers want ....

We will be having a 3 course sit down meal earlier in the day but only for 20 of us, then a champagne reception at our evening reception for the rest of our guests and then the evening food....

    Thanks for ideas

    Anybody else got anything else???

Have you thought about a cake made of cheese? I'm thinking about getting one of these (if my venue will allow it) for the evening. You could then put out cheese biscuits and chutneys and stuff and maybe add meats/pates if you wanted something alternative? Should be fairly easy to do and most people love cheese!

    Hi,

We're having a pizza buffet in the evening (4 different types plus salad). Our venue has an on-site chef who is making them but if you liked this idea maybe you could negotiate a bulk order discount with a local take-away and get them to deliver it?

    Ali :o)

What about fish and chips? A friend of mine knows someone who hired a fish and chip van for her wedding - apparently, it wasn't expensive and they rustled up guests' orders on the spot. Great fun! Alternatively, if you have a lot of friends and family living locally, could you ask some people to bring something.

    Good luck with finding something!

Try sainsburys, you can order platters of buffet food, sandwiches, pork pies, crackers and cheese, crisps and dips etc from them. They come really nicely presented. It might be worth a try.

I filmed a wedding a fortnight ago where they had fish and chips brought in, in the evening... it went down like a storm and cost less than a buffet per head (they just had individual suppers wrapped in papers set out on a big table and people helped themselves ?

Thanks very much for all your replies... I think we have come to a decsion i have contacted out local chippy and can not believe how much cheaper this option would be compared to a buffet .... so thanks for that...

but... do you think going for sausage and chips and a second option of burger or fish cake and chips would make us look like real cheap skates ?? as the other problem we have is that we only have seating for 100 and have 150 guests! we are going to get some bread rolls and nibbles crisps etc aswell

    thanks

I would say if you can offer a meat, fish & veggie option then everyone will be really happy. Are you allowed to have 150 guests from a health & safety point of view. If so, can you hire extra chairs or otherwise serve the food in waves so people can eat, then vacate their seat and dance their chips off!

I don't think it looks cheap at all, I think its a great idea and think most people will agree. e are ahving the sausage and bacon rolls in the evening and the people that we have told have all said that they would love that after having a few drinks. I'm sure that they would be the same with having a chippy during the day!!!

    Hi

Have you thought about hiring a food 'van'. You can get fish and chips or what about pie and mash? Pukka Pies do vans. This was the cooking is off site. It just depends if they are able to get the van close enough to the venue?

Waitrose have a entertainment section where you can order food that is cooked and needs reheating but you still have the issue of getting people to do this for you.

Maybe look into hiring an on the day co-ordinator who might be able to help organise this for you and also run the day for you in the absence of a venue co-ordinator or catering manager.

Ok, I always do this, reply THEN read the rest of the posts!

I love the idea of fish and chips, just think about the smell overpowering the whole evening. Think about where they will be served from because 100 portions of fish & chips is going to be quite strong. Anyhooo. Still love it. I would ask the shop if they are able to get the replica newspaper to wrap it in as opposed to the normal greyish paper. That would make it look really autentic. Love the idea of bread too, can make chip butties!!!!!
