Wedding Hymns

blushing_bride, 16 January, 2012 at 18:59 Posted on Planning 0 30

Hi Everyone,

I'm starting to feel the pressure of organising a wedding and thought I should get advice (and hopefully give advice too!) from others in the same situation.

I got engaged in August and almost straight away started planning our wedding for June which I can't believe its only 5 months away it has came round so quick.

Anyway, we are looking for Hymns for our Service, so far we have decided on "One More Step Along the World I Go", and are struggling to find another that we like. Looking for something quite upbeat as personally I find alot of the slower hymns slightly boring. Anyone experiencing the same or got any ideas?

Thanks

xx

Well theres the ever popular all things bright and beautiful. You could opt for something like 'bind us together lord'. how about 'the world is black, the world is white', thats kind of upbeat.

To be honest I actually remember it from school! But quite like the lyrics.

Had a look at Bind us Together Lord but someone we know had that quite recently so trying to keep it different. Think good old All things bright and beautiful might be the one!!

    Thanks guys xx

Is give me oil in my lamp and give me joy in my heart the same song? Just listened to the tune and they are very similar, very catchy too think this could be a winner!!

Give me oil and Give me joy are the same hymn just different verses.

Word of warning with "All things...." it's really long!! It has about 6 verses and choruses. lol

Every Sunday I flick through the hymn book for inspiration but not sure it's helping me decide.

I really want 'as the deer pants for the water', I think its lovely and appropriate, but a bit slow, and I'm worried people wont know it to sing along

A lot of hymn choice depends on your church size, how many people at the wedding and the acoustics in the church (plus the organ and organist).

Shine Jesus Shine is a nice upbeat hymn, but it's quite hard to sing well, and can drag really badly. Not the easiest organ part either.

I've got to be a bit careful as my church will seat well over 400 at a push, comfortable at 350 and realistically there will be under 100 at the wedding. Fortunately the acoustic is unusually friendly in the two main aisles and we're having the choir which adds quite well to the oomph in the singing, but am trying to go for well known hymns that don't "need" to fill the church. Fortunately the choir + 30ish people at Evensong doesn't sound too empty, but I'd have doubts without a choir and with a less friendly acoustic - think the ceiling must be about the perfect height or something, looks low from outside and high from inside!

Our friends had "Give me oil in my lamp" and "Lord of the Dance" for their wedding in July, which were lovely, but means that we've had to choose something different.

We're having "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" (as found in the Royal Wedding ?) and "All Things Bright and Beautiful"

Think it's fairly well known - I know it from my school days and I know very few hymns. It's relatively modern though.

Needs a GOOD organist though, and preferably a choir to lead the singing as it's not got an easy rhythm and can drag badly.

We are having Lord of the Dance as it is my absolute favourite and it makes me smile. I have also choosen Shine Jesus Shine 1) because it is gorgeous and 2) it was sung at my nephews funeral and although that was a sad occasion this is my way of having him a part of my day. I have spoken to my family and they all thought it was nice and promised not to cry... it will be me that cries but for happy tears knowing he will be right by myside!

If I was having my church wedding (sob) I was going to have:

Shine Jesus Shine (We used to have to do the actions to this at school)

Let there be love shared among us

How great thou art was also on the shortlist

We had a blessing rather than a church wedding, but the music is pretty similar. I had Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer to start with, as a big rousing number, then in the middle we had Make Me a Channel of Your Peace, quiet and beautiful, and our final one was You Shall Go Out With Joy, which is a bit silly and fun!

There are tonnes of others I would have loved if I had my way, but OH wouldn't let me go too crazy with the music. ☹️

We're having One More Step Along the World I go and Jerusalem. We are also thinking of adding either All Things Bright and Beautiful or Bind Us Together.

My cousins had One More Step and Bind Us Together

    We are having:

Hymn: We Gather Here (to the tune Jerusalem)

We gather here, we gather now,

drawn by the love we know and share.

We come to celebrate our joy

the union of this bridal pair.

To them our hearts reach out with love,

on them the light of heav’n above

shines down in grace abundant and free

    to bless them both eternally.

And we who join to wish them well

offer them both our love and pray’r

that they may walk in fullness of life

the journey they have come to share.

That they may know if storms come near

that they have friends and fam’ly here

for we commit ourselves to pray

and love and cherish them each day.

    and

Hymn: These Vows of Love are Taken (to the tune ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’)

These Vows of Love are taken,

    as rings of love received,

    we witness here among us

    a mystery believed:

    that in God’s holy presence

    a marriage has begun

    and these your precious children

    have now become as one.

For the things of earth and heaven

    draw closer as we pray,

and in heav’n the angels celebrate

    with us on earth today.

    For all our many blessings

    we offer thanks and praise,

for gifts of love and fellowship

    our thankful hearts we raise.

God’s hand has held us safely

and brought us to this day,

    God has guided and protected

and taught us on the way.

For the love we learn on earth is

the love we’ll find in heav’n

and the human love we celebrate

is love that God has giv’n.

    Hi OP,

We both sing so wanted our service to be full of lovely music!

    We chose the following hymns:

Come ye faithful, raise the anthem

Let all the world in every corner sing (this is wonderful - very joyful and quite short too!)

O thou who at thy Eucharist didst pray (we had a Communion service)

    Come down O love divine

Tell out my soul (another fab and happy hymn)

We're hoping to have Amazing Grace (not exactly upbeat, but gorgeous!) and 'When A Knight Won His Spurs' which is my absolute favourite hymn and, as a primary teacher, I get our school to sing it as much as possible! We have 'One More Step' as the leavers song each year so couldn't have that!

Also considering 'Lord of the dance' as our Reverend has suggested we have 3 hymns and it's another I love, but OH not keen.

    Hi All, (1st post ?)

We are having Lord of the Dance, it is my all time favourite!

I'm not sure on the second, my mum wants Jerusalem but I'm worried it will be too big a song for a little church wedding.

I agree with the dimemma of long hymns as all me and our families believe but are not massive church attenders and i am only having 45 in the little chapel so i am worried if no one sings or wants to the mood will be felt-if that makes sense?

My OH wants lord of the dance and although i do love that song it was only 6 months ago he went to a funneral and came home an said they played that and i just can't get that out of my head now so everytime we talk about hymns i just can't agree as i picture myself on my wedding day hearing that song and thinking of funnerals.

    That sound crazy ️?️

I have been using the my church wedding website as it is so useful and has helped me plan what vows we want and gives examples of popular hymns and readings. I have book marked all my faves so when i buy a printer today i can print it out to take when we have our first meeting with the Revd in April.

Hi we are getting married on 30th June and I've started thinking about the hymns.

I really love 'One more step along the world I go' so definitely want that, but i'm unsure of the other 2 hymns.

I like the lyrics to 'We Pledge to one Another'

    We pledge to one another,
    before the Lord above,
    entire and whole and perfect,
this union of our love —
a love that will be patient,
a love that will be wise,
that will not twist with envy,
    nor lose itself in lies;
a love that will not falter,
a love to hold us fast,
and bind us to each other
as long as life shall last.

We pray that God will guide us
through all the years to be,
our lives be shaped by courage,
    hope and serenity.
    Through joy and celebration,
    through loneliness and pain,
    may loyalty, compassion
    and tenderness remain,
that those who share the blessing
    of love that cannot cease
may walk the paths of gentleness
    into the place of peace.
