Wedding in a hurry!

SuH, 19 October, 2012 at 13:06 Posted on Planning 0 51

My fiance and I were planning to get married next June but 3 weeks ago he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given a prognosis of 6-12 months. He had his first chemo yesterday and although we know the cancer is terminal we are hoping that the chemo will give us more time and allieviate some of his symptoms.

We have booked a wedding at our local register office in Cambridge and bought the wedding forward to 3rd November. We are trying to get the reception at our local pub or hotel in Cambourne Cambridge but so far have not heard from either of them.

Any tips or help would be much appreciated for planning a wedding in 2 weeks.....

Su

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear this. My only advice would be to call in all the favours you can with friends and family and rope in anyone you can to help, I'm sure everyone would be happy to help you.

I'm so sorry the hear your sad news, I would suggest going down and talking to the places in person and see what they can do, how many guest would you be having? Would just finding a pub and going for a meal be an option? Or even crashing a fireworks display that's happening in the area.

I'm so sorry to hear that and I hope the treatment helps to keep your fiance as pain free as possible.

If you speak to the venues then I'd ask if they have any recommended local suppliers. Hopefully most places will have plenty of availability at this time of year.

Sorry to hear your news. You can still pull this together:

Dress: Monsoon / Coast / Debenhams. Same for BM dresses, shoes, hair accessories and jewellery.

    Suit: M&S / Debenhams

Rings: High street should have loads of sizes in stock so you don't have to order them

Flowers: Ready tied bouquets from Tesco or M&S

Photos: if you can't get a pro, get family and friends to bring cameras

Food: Pub or hotel will cater, of course. Otherwise for cheap and cheerful lower key stuff, M&S and Waitrose do catering platters.

Entertainment: Hopefully you will find a band or DJ free at this time of year. Otherwise get a friend to make an ipod playlist and use the venue's PA.

Anything specific that you need help with?

I'm so sorry to hear of your situation, and I echo everything that people above are saying.

What about putting a post in the Wanted Section on here asking for freebies people might have left from their wedding? I'm sure people would love to help you, rather than have things gathering dust. You could also do the same on your local gumtree.

I know it's not the way you would have chosen to do it, but I'm sure it will still be a wonderful and happy day. All the best to you both.

Su, so sorry your plans have had to change for such a sad reason.

In terms of catering, a local village hall could still have a hog roast if you couldn't find a pub to cater. It would likely give you a lot more room to do what you want, when you want. Caterers have the facilities to do the food in pouring rain or bright sunshine. Or a fish and chip van, or something minimum fuss where the food is 'delivered' so to speak.

I honestly do believe that if you sort a venue and a dress, the rest will be surprisingly straightforward. Good luck. x

So so sorry for your awful news.

If you don't hear back from Pub/Hotel is it worth appealing to Star Fm to see if anyone can help at short notice?

Sorry to hear your news, not sure if you would be happy to do it or not but local radio/newspapers etc may be able to run the story and see if there can be anything done to help you.

Thank you all so much for all your comments and help. I have been to town with our three daughters today trying to buy bridesmaid dresses and with 3 teenage girls it is not easy to find something they all like at a price we can afford.

I really appreciate all your kind wishes and tips and offers of help.

    Thank you

Try Jane Norman - I have found some maxi dresses that easily suit BM dresses for the grand sum of £60 each. Also House of Fraser online, again, had some Jane Norman ones in their sale for £30 each (again easily BM dresses).

All the best though for your day. It may be done in a hurry but it will be the most magical day ever!! Best wishes to your OH, I hope he isn't in too much pain after his treatment today x

I think it's great that you are doing something positive and moving the wedding forward, very brave. Keep shouting on here with any specific qs. I guess pre-made wedding invites from M and S or somewhere else high street (or email/phone ppl/print using Word/Publisher). Do lots of internet shopping this weekend as can be done whenever convenient and more time for it to come. BHS, M and S, Debenhams etc sale wedding shoes and veils etc to order. Ask a friend/relative to bake a cake as just checked M and S for you and shortest time is 3 weeks. Best of luck xx

I'm so sorry to hear your news. I'm sure loads of people will be willing to help out if you tell them the story.

Have you thought about contacting Macmillan and/or the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge? I did a student placement there and I know that they have done weddings in a rush for their patients in the past so they might be able to give you some suggestions. Plus of course having the support of Macmillan through all of this will be very useful.

If you need any templates for invites, order of services etc I have them all. And if you have a range near you I can tell you the invites I used so all you will need to do is change the names and places, (the dates the same) and they will be good to go.

I don't have a lot to add just really wanted to say it is lovely that you are bringing forward the wedding and making some more happy memories.

What are the main areas you still need to organise? Everyone here on Hitched can be so supportive all you need to do is ask. xx

I am so sorry to hear your news - you share our wedding day and I will definitely send a prayer your way.

I don't have much advice to offer I'm afraid, apart from maybe contact the register office and see if they offer any in-house planning or can recommend suppliers? But as the others have said we're all here for help and support and I'll try my best to help if I think I can!

Just remembered you can buy wedding cakes off the shelf in larger M and S stores. Might be worth investigating soon as might need a particular stand as not sure it comes with dowels or how easy these are? Lots of underwear stores sale garters in store (and some card shops). I think phoning suppliers rather than emailing is best as more likely to get quicker response. If you struggle to arrange bouquets in time some ppl have done bride and bridesmaids with pretty clutch bags (these can be found cheap online). Ok I am just rambling stuff but trying to think of things it would be easy to forget when rushing. xx

    Hi SuH,

I am sorry to hear of you news but thinking of you & your courage in continuing on.

I got married in Sydney so most of my wedding things are there. I do have a dress I can post you though. Its a chinese copy of Maggie Sottero- Vivien style & would need adjusting by a seamstress to remove tulle netting underneath & fix a few small things like the straps & the underskirt. I never used it as would have needed adjusting & I found a dress in Sydney.

Its a diamond white colour, with sweetheart neckline, crystal straps (although they can be removed) & a crystal thing on 1 hip. It has a puddle train also. I'm a size 12 but the bust area seemed much bigger & would need adjusting if you are smaller than say a 14. I'm 5ft 6.

Here are some photos of the genuine dress, but bear in mind, the dress I have does look different & isnt a genuine Maggie Sottero. (satin not as nice, crystal parts are different & they added tulle under the hip areas & made it a zip & corset back instead of just a corset).

Let me know if you would like it though.( the pics arent of me but to give you an idea)

I've been wracking my brains for ways in which I may be able to help you. I can certainly give you details for the florist, MUA and chair cover people we are using.

I also have details for a lady who makes cupcakes. Cambourne helium are a local firm who do balloon displays.

Morrisons flower section staff can do bouquets etc.

If you are on facebook, there is a group on there called wedding items for sale in and around cambridgeshire

    Other venues locally

    Bourn Golf club

    Longstowe Hall

    Minstrel court

    Childerley estate at Dry Drayton

The Menzies Hotel at Bar Hill

The Holiday Inn (Impington and in town)

    the Golden Ball at Boxworth

    the willow tree at Bourn

I have sweet buffet jars, scoops etc.. and a post box you are more than welcome to borrow.

    hth x

Hi sue, I just wanted to say that we started to plan a three week wedding because Ohs dad had cancer. For us we went for just family to limit planning and abandoned certain elements to focus on what really mattered. Do focus on the important bits e.g the service, the food. I'm sure you won't notice what's missing. I hope you do take paul up on his offer as photos will be very treasured mementos. Our wedding didn't go ahead as we were too late. We are sad we had waited for so long, hoping the prognosis would be better than it was.
