Wedding in Herts

moonyboy99, 10 of October of 2011 at 20:04 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hey Guys,

Me and my fiance! just got engaged have embarked on starting to plan the event, our budget is £12.5k which I though sounded good, but she thinks we'll go way over (We cant really afford to). We have about 80 people for the ceremony and 100 for the evening do.

Do you think this is achieveable in a nice Hertfordshire location(ideally a large house with grounds)? We are going a few looksies next week, they seem to be around £6k for the venue, leaving 6k for everything else, is this alright?? I'm starting to panic a little about money already and we stil have 2years to go!!!

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!

THanks,

Will & Helen

Shouldn't be a problem. We're managing to stick to a £5k budget in Herts with half the number of guests you have.

Welcome to the forum. there are many Herts venues, although there is better value for money if you have your wedding away from the weekend, as venues will often offer substantial discounts.

As asked, tell us where roughly you want your wedding and we can then suggest several options that may fit your dreams....

    ohhh, and congratulations btw?

I think our Saturday Wedding Budget is less than that! (but a bit more modest!)

The best deals you'll get from many venues will be mid-week and out of season.

Shop around, some venues focus on corporate deals mid-week, and so many not be able to offer anything good for Weddings, but I'm sure you'll be successful. As mid-week is less popular, you can spend a bit more time checking out deals.

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll find something perfect for you both!

If you let us know your ideal area, we can all help with ideas.

    Hey all

Thanks for your replies! We currently live in St. Albans, but are fairly happy to move around a bit (Within 1h ideally), we are going to have a look at Sopwell House this weekend, as their quote is for about £6k for venue meal etc,

The plan is for around 80 (Probably a bit less) for a ceremony (Ideally a church, but don't have a clue how to organise this!) and then an evening do for around 100 (Again probably less).

With a year and half to go, I think we can spend some time looking, to find things within our range, but she is all gun ho for ridiculously expensive venues, so I see trouble ahead!

    Thanks,

    Will

    Hello!

I am in the same area and we went to The Ridings Barn at Theobalds Park in Waltham Abbey for our wedding (ceremony was in the Abbey church itself).

Our budget was £10k (not including honeymoon though).

We saved about £4k by getting married 2 weeks before their "peak season" in March. A friend of mine did a similar thing by getting married in October.

Sopwell House is lovely, but you don't get exclusive hire with that (unless they have changed their rules since we looked). Depending on whether you mind there being another 2 couples celebrating at the same time this may or may not be an issue.

Loads of lovely venues in Herts/Essex

    Good Luck!

Oooo Mrs C I didn't realise you had your reception at The Ridings Barn - I will have to dig out your report to have a read!!. We have ours their in June next year (Saturday in peak wedding season) - so probably out of your budget moonyboy, but if you can get it cheaper midweek/off peak then it's an amazing venue.

Oooh do... it was amazing. I'll see if I can bounce it for you!

I didn't get to have photos in the treehouse though and they turned down my suggestion to turn it into the bridal suite!! ?

There's Sheene Mill which is about 10 mins from Royston. It's actually in Cambridgeshire, but literally only just and it is gorgeous! It's not the grandest of venues inside but outside is stunning with the mill pond and the staff there have been fantastic (so far!). We're getting ours for £8K for the day guests (100) and that also includes an evening buffet for 150. That's a Saturday wedding in August so they might move on the price a bit if it wasn't peak time or a Sat. I know it's slightly outside of Herts but it might be worth a look.

Congratulations! I am based in Buckinghamshire and have played at a large variety of Herts venues which I think will fall within your price bracket - Down Hall, for instance, on the Herts/Essex border; Chenies Manor House, right over the other side, close to Bucks, High Elms Manor (on the outskirts of Watford). High Elms for instance will charge you in the region of 3.5k whichever day of the week you go for.

Good luck - I have played at all three and can't recommend them highly enough.

Emma suggests some good venues......there is also Three Lakes near to Ware. No country House, although a beautiful outdoor wedding location. The venue is very well priced as well.

    Hey guys,

Had a good look around today, and attended the Hatfield House show which was interesting, if a little depressing in terms of prices (£1500 for photos, £800 for videographer!) Wondering if any of you guys know any good cheaper options in these categories?

We also visited St Michaels Manor in St. Albans which was lovely!

    Thanks,

    Will

    Try this

    https://farmhouseatredcoats.co.uk

OH's friends married there a while ago, and his parents had their 40th wedding celebrations there earlier this year. Lovely grounds, possibility of a marquee reception if you prefer, and lovely food. No idea of costs, but I'd imagine lots cheaper than a stately home style venue.

Hmm, turns out I spoke too soon. We've changed our mind and getting married in a friend's barn, which raises the cost by a grand Smiley sad We're in St A too, and found it really tough to find something reasonably priced and still lovely.

My sister is having her reception at Rothamstead Manor and it's stunning! It's just outside Harpenden so not far at all, and much more reasonable than Sopwell House or St Michael's Manor. If you're looking to keep your costs down, I really recommend getting married outside of peak season, it's way cheaper!

Oh, and congratulations to you both!

Yes I think your budget is still enough for your wedding. What's more important is you have enjoyed the whole ceremony and you have feel the real joy of having a beautiful wedding.

Hey Moony, I'm another Herts bride.

We've a budget of £12K and we really want to stick to that, and with everything I've written on paper I think that is a comfortable amount, we only have 65 sitting down, so you have another 15 people, but another £500!

Had to drop a few minor things, which I'm now actually very happy that I've dropped, because I realised that I was running away with the commercialism of it all, so no bestman socks or cufflinks, no bridesmaids teeshirts for when getting ready. No gimmicky favours, no commerical post box etc.

I actually gained an extra thousand or so, just cutting out things which I really don't need and are replacing them with much more personalised, made items.

It was a good revelation, and not only ssaves money, which I've redirected into more imporant areas, such as better, bigger centre table bouquets, and fabric to decorate the chairs.

A more personalised wedding for less money sounds good to me!

I can also recommend you a great photographer, he Hertfordshire based, and I'm paying just under a thousand for him to be there all day and with a huge, beautiful handmade storybook. You can find him here - www.photographybyriddell.co.uk/WeddingsBlog.htm

He also did the same all day with a disc only for under £600.00 which I seriously considered.

Can't recommend a videographer though as I'm not going to have one.

Have you settled on a venue location yet?

    S.
