Wedding Insurance

Emma, 4 May, 2021 at 13:23 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hello,

Could someone give me any advice or ideas on where to go for wedding insurance?

I have been doing some research but the prices have been really varied and it seems a lot aren't offering insurance until Covid issues have changed. I'm not really sure what the changes need to be, seems a bit of a mess to work through.

Thank you,

Em

I’ve gone with wedinsure as they’re the only ones I found taking new customers. I did use them for my COVID cancelled Greek wedding, but didn’t end up claiming as the majority of payments were cash when you got there, so financially we didn’t lose too much, so I don’t know what they’re like if you actually have to claim.

The premiums have more than doubled since I took out the first lot of insurance though!

    Thank you both Smiley smile

Hadn't come across wedinsure so that is good to know! I have seen the no new policies and definitely seem more expensive than what they use to offer. But better safe than sorry I guess.

Any tips on what to look out for and what to include apart from the obvious?

I am just paying for stuff on credit card as it was impossible to find insurance. It offers some level of protection at least.

We’re thinking of going with wedinsure and paying for things on credit cards just to give us a little extra cover. Even after covid is under-control I doubt we will see insurance companies return to covering disruptions from pandemics etc, so we’ve also booked a venue who are super flexible with the date, fully detailed in their ts&cs, so it can be moved if necessary.

Unfortunately we haven't got credit cards that we can put some stuff on to, but as you say we do have a venue which will be flexible etc. After more reading online you're right I think from now on no insurance company will ever have anything in place for Covid or pandemics, but I think we will use wedinsure. Apparently the industry is waiting for some news from officials that will mean underwriters create a few more policies but it seems none will cover anything unprecedented.

Thank you for all of your help and suggestions though! Glad to see I'm not alone in this x

I need to get insurance sorted too, most suppliers now have Covid clauses to cover rescheduling and we've paid the deposit for the venue on credit card for extra security. The thing that worries me about the insurance on offer is that the supplier failure cover is so low on them all and wedding items tend to be so expensive!

But like people say, wedinsure and Cover my wedding are the only options at the moment so not a whole lot of choice on that front!

I have found that all of the suppliers we've chosen so far aren't accepting any payment method other than bank transfer. I would have liked to have used a credit card (to earn points/rewards) but haven't been able to. Am I missing a work around?!

I’m less concerned about covid cover, I’m hoping suppliers will be flexible if necessary.

Paying by credit card does give you certain protection for that particular item, however if you have to rearrange because your venue goes bust the week before, then the non refundable photographer and cake won’t be covered etc.

Similarly, if you have to cancel due to illness, a credit card company won’t refund you as it’s not the supplier at fault.

I think the main reason is that they don't want to pay the credit card fees. It's such a shame because at the moment there aren't any other ways of protecting payments given the lack of wedding insurance. I would even accept if they passed the fees onto me - as the venue is the largest expenditure it would have set my mind at ease knowing that I have at least some kind of cover in place. People are still booking weddings (our venue only had two weekends in 2022 left back in February) and so there is still a need for protection from somewhere.

We ended up taking insurance through wedinsure just to be on the safe side, we know that Covid related issues aren't covered but felt the need for some kind of peace of mind. We have also been very selective about suppliers based on their current Covid policies and flexibility approach. If other policies come out in the near future then we will consider taking an additional policy out. An extra couple of hundred pounds seems worth it to protect thousands...

Have you asked if they can offer a pay by card option? a few of our suppliers gave an initial invoice with bank only details but once we asked if there was an option to by card they provided details. It’s a lot of money to put at risk when insurance is so hard to come by. I know they want to keep cash flow a certain way and avoid fees, but it’s always worth asking

I'm with you, we will more than likely take out the insurance knowing it won't cover Covid but better to have the peace of mind. Our venue has a policy to take care of its brides, he took care of all the brides that had to postpone last year and this year, so we get the same service which is good. Tbh I wasn't too worried about doing BACs or using a card, but putting it on a credit card just wasn't ever going to be an option.

We are going with our venue for Feb 12th next year and hopefully, it will all be okay but I think for peace of mind I'm happy to get a couple of insurance covers just in case.

Yeah I have to say, though it wasn't an option, we did look at the protection offered by paying on a credit card and we didn't feel it gave as much as getting insurance, even without a clause on Covid. I think as you say, as long as the suppliers are being understanding and offer some form of flexibility, then that's the best you can get at the moment.

We just bought wedding insurance this morning from Wedinsure. For us they were the only option out there. Slim pickings...and no-one covers for Covid.

    Good luck :-)
