Wedding Insurance

Paul & Dawn, 28 of April of 2014 at 23:05 Posted on Planning 0 24

Hello,

I'm just starting my wedding planning and think it's best to start with wedding insurance! Can anyone recommence E&L or Wedding Plan? If you are with either, what level of cover are you taking? Are there any other companies I should consider?

Thanks Smiley smile

You're right! I think everyone should have wedding insurance. I wrote an article about it here if you want more info:

E&L seem very popular. I wonder if Hitched do their own too? I saw an advert on this site earlier so it might be worth searching for it here.

Just purchased mine went with E & L insurance as I had previously been looking at that company, pretty easy to do and cost me just over £26.

Mine's with E&L too - think I took level 2, but I got a discount because my wedding dress supplier is affiliated - so worth bearing that in mind.

It's worth looking round for discount codes for it as they are out there too - but deffo worth having for what it costs and the piece of mind you get.

Does anyone know of one that covers for deposits already paid. It's only the venue deposit that I'm worried about.

Some do. I used Dreamsaver Wedding insurance for my wedding and on their FAQ it states that they do cover deposits already paid.

Thankfully I never had to claim so cannot comment on their claims service but it did give us both a lot of peace of mind which was worth much more than the £35 we paid.

    We've gone with John Lewis.

Them or Debenhams seemed to have the best reputation for actually paying out in the event of needing to claim. Lots of the cheaper ones we looked at had horrible reviews for paying out so do check and make sure you're happy with exactly what's covered and their T&Cs before purchasing any ?

Bliss, the deposits already paid issue comes up a lot. Even specialists like E&L cap the "already paid" section of the insurance. When I spoke to E&L they were capping at £1000.

So my advice is that if an insurer says previous deposits are covered then you need to ask if that's capped. I think some companies cap it but don't volunteer that information. So if you have a cap of £1000 and your venue deposit was £2000 then nothing is covered!

I also identified an issue with capping at 2 years out from the wedding... so if you book a supplier 3 years prior you can't book insurance until 2 years prior. I have a bride who booked me in Jan 2013 for her wedding in May 2016. I'll be re-issuing her contract in a few weeks time so that it is signed after her wedding insurance comes into effect.

Thanks Paula, it's hard to know who to go with just because there isn't much in the way of reviews for most of them. I've seen terrible reviews for E&L so will be avoiding them.

The cancellation cover that I've looked at pays out if you die or are too ill to attend. Also covers things that could go wrong on the day, like the photographer not turning up or loosing all the photos or problems with being able to get there because of extreme weather. Also if gifts get stolen, this would be covered under most insurances. What if someone looses the rings? There's lots that could go wrong so worth having.

We've gone with wedplan - same underwriters as Debenhams but as i've seen somewhere else on here cheaper as you're not getting the brand name attached.

My dad used to work in insurance so he's my go to, he had problems with E&L in the past and wouldn't even consider them.

If any of you do go with wedplan, little tip, if you sign up to something on the website they send you a 5% discount code which i think was FIVE5 so my dad cheekily tried TEN10 and it worked.... ?

Cancelled my insurance through E & L today, within my 14 days. Really unsure of them now. Back to the drawing board for me.

When I paid my deposit last week the wedding planner advised about wedding insurance - It hadn't even crossed my mind before then.

Does it cover everything including the bits and pieces I bought before taking the insurance policy out?

And does it cover the small things like favors?

    Thanks Smiley smile

Thanks for all the suggestions in this thread! I didn't like the look of E&L so it's a choice between Weddingplan, John Lewis, Debenhams or My-wedding insurance, but I think we might go with John Lewis or Debenhams as at least we know the companies!

Hang a banger.... I just had a quick peek at Debenhams for an example... and it says £39. Now, is that £39 per month or just a one-off £39 to cover the whole shabang?

It should be £39 to cover the whole shebang.

Ours cost £35 as a one off payment. For the peace of mind it's well worth it.

We went with John Lewis in the end, they do about 7 levels of cover and we went with level 2 which is £70 for the whole thing. Well worth it for peace of mind Smiley smile

I know Ollievision said that E&L will cover pre-paid deposits up to £1000 (which is great, because mine are at £500), but like everyone else, am a bit dubious of them now. Does anyone know if Debenhams or John Lewis will cover that deposit? Can't seem to find it on their T&Cs or anything. Thanks!

I used Dreamsaver for our insurance and they covered prepaid deposits. It's listed on their first page.

    • Cover for deposits, even if you have paid them prior to buying cover

I'm not recommending them or anything since I never claimed (thankfully) but just saying who i used.
