Wedding photos

Pam, 26 June, 2022 at 23:52 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 6
We got married April 2022. Shortly after the wedding, I asked the photographer when he thought the photos would be done. He said he had a backlog of weddings to edit dating all the way back to 2021 weddings! In April 2022! It’s not even peak wedding season early in the year. Fast forward and we’ve been married nearly 3 months now. The photographer recently emailed saying there’s 3 more weddings he needs to edit before he even starts ours. I understand photos take a while to edit but should he be taking on the number of weddings he is doing if he then doesn’t have the time to edit the photos? We have a contract with him but no timeframe in it in terms of getting our photos. We’ve had friends receive their wedding photos from their photographer in less time than it’s taking him to even start ours. I’m disappointed and it’s causing me stress. Can I do anything about this? Is this a normal situation?

We had similar, we then pointed out that in the contract it states photos would be delivered fully edited in 8 weeks, so if he was not able to do that then he is in breach of contract and would need to compensate us, we got then 3 days later! If there is nothing in the contract around timescale for delivery then sadly you will just have to wait and write it up as a lesson learnt, as not much else you can do. At least he is communicating, we had friends who were ghosted for months, whist not ideal to have a wait this long at least he is being honest. Try not to stress, it seems he is committed to delivering them so you will get them, no point in threatening or getting angry with him as it is only likely to put his back up and delay it further.

Best action I think is to try and keep patient as you don't want to risk him perhaps rushing the editing. Its not your problem he has a backlog and to be still working on weddings since 2021 sounds odd, some reasons could be that they are not a pro and have another full time job, or that they take on weddings all over and pay other people to do them - but still do the editing themselves. Or he pays someone else to do the editing and its they that have the backlog. At least he is keeping you informed.

Sounds like he does a lot of editing - like removing exit signs - skin blemishes. As some just run everything through an automated process for colour and brightness.

Perhaps he keeps his prices low and travels all over the country constantly shooting and has booked more weddings than he can realistically handle and remain fair to the couples.

I restrict how many weddings I shoot so as not to overload myself and impact on the delivery times. Also Some dress materials can reproduce the wrong shade of colour in camera. So Its very important that I edit straight away so that the proper colour is still fresh in my mind and I can tweak it as necessary.

Yes it’s a shame a deadline isn’t in our contract.

I do think it is irresponsible that he has taken on so many weddings to the point he has such a large backlog. We’ve been married 3 and a half months and he’s still not even started our photos. I’m at the point where I’m wondering if I should ask for them unedited and pay someone else to edit them?

How much did you pay and for how long .

I doubt that they will release them unedited. A big part of a photographers finished product is the after wedding editing which is what defines their style and quality of work, and probably one of the reasons that you chose them - because you liked their work.

From the shooters point of view if the editing is crap then you are going to go back to the shooter and complain that his photos are crap.

In the editing I go to massive lengths to maintain the dress detail and correct colours because despite cameras costing 1000s straight out the camera is rarely good enough to deliver.

take a look here at the before and after editing. Not every photographer has the necessary skills to do this however and if you did not see the final result you would probably think the first one is ok.

We paid £1600. This was for one photographer, for ten hours of our wedding day, 500 online pictures and 100 of our choice in a photo book.
We very recently received an email saying he has finally started to edit our photos (4 months after getting married). So at least that’s something.
