Wedding theme ... Help/ideas would be great! *Few flashes*

Banana88, 13 October, 2011 at 13:33 Posted on Planning 0 25

Help, Advice, ideas needed. Or tell me i'm stupid!

I don't even know where to begin with this post.

Right OH is a bit of a train bum enthusiast. He has been since I met him, however due to work commitments/lack of time it has really toned down lately. He's no train spotter, doesn't sit at a station wearing an anorak & camera jotting down numbers. He just has some strange love for smelly, dirty diesel trains. Typically being female I do not understand the fascination, so have never really shared his hobby. Before our venue was booked OH even suggested getting married at the National Railway Museum! Obviously my reply was 'No way!' for the fact it involved trains and being over a hours drive away.

As my head is constantly in wedding mode, I sat last night thinking about ideas for guest books/table numbers/you name - as long as it involved our wedding. The idea popped into my head to try and somehow involve trains in the day for OH as a surprise. I honestly think he would love it, and it would be so unexpected from his anti-train B2B. Especially after I told him anything train related was banned from the wedding. He has been very much involved in the planning of the day, but the decoration/little jobs he's more of less left to me. So this would make it easy-ish to keep a secret until the 'big day'.

This is probably a long shot but, have any of you hitchers/OM's/HIBs been to a wedding that had a train theme? If so what sort of things did they have?

My ideas so far are:

**Instead of the planned table numbers, to have table names of the places he likes to visit (e.g Fort William, Edinburgh, Penzance..) They're the only ones at the min I can think of. Luckily his BM is also a train enthusiast, so if I decide to do this he probably will play a big part in helping me, hopefully!

**Train cufflinks.

**Wish tree instead of guest book, with train tickets to hang on them. (preferably 'real' blank tickets - but these will be pretty hard to get hold of)

**Train place card holders for Bride/Groom place settings.

**Possibly a small train incorporated in the cake somewhere

Now I know this won't be to most peoples taste, it really isn't mine. It's just and idea at the minute as I really would like to do something as a surprise for OH. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly received.

Anna x

p.s here a few piccies of ideas i've put together so far..

Cufflinks - They're of the Mallard not a diesel train, but it's the thought that counts

Image board of wish tree idea - it wont have purple butterflies on, but the sort of thing i'd like.

For the place setting (obviously without the 'baby' at the top - seen them somewhere without it, just can't remember where!)

I think this is a really lovely idea and something he will not expect, which makes it even lovelier in my books! Have you thought of naming your tables after famous trains? Would be easier for you to research and then you don't need to get the BM involved and it would be a surprise for him too. Have you got your cake topper yet? I picked up a leaflet at the National Wedding show that did customised ones that weren't overly expensive. You upload your photos to their website and they make the bride and groom look like you. You can then choose how they are posed, they must have a train that you could both be sitting in? I havent got my wedding book on me now, but if you want the details give me a shout!

I think a wedding in a train station for enthusiasts would be fab... quite a romantic oldy worldy feel!

But you have already said that isn't for so I digress!

I think of art deco when I think of railways... found some images that may inspire you for other things...

Paint white for your Mr & Mrs sign or surname?

Ticket style invitations (although this will give him a clue...)

    Personalised Train Station Sign

Will see if I can think of anything else...

    Thanks Mrs C!

I do kinda regret being so sharp with saying no to the National Rail Museum now. I know he would have loved it. I need to stop being so anti-train, after all it's his hobby.

I bought us a Mr&Mrs sign, but I think it might just have to be sold on because I love the little train idea! And the train sign.

Knew you wonderful hitchers/OMs would give me some inspiration ?

How about using train buttons as table confetti instead of diamantes? or sew a couple of them in to the garter

    http://www.knit-n-***.co.uk/10-train-shaped-buttons---red-676-p.asp

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=train+button&_sacat=0&_dmpt=UK_Collectables_Memorabila_RL&_odkw=train+memorabilia&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

How about buying bulk lots of old train stamps and sticking them to your own made place cards? boat loads of character ins ome like these.....

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-DIFFERENT-LEADERS-WORLD-TRAINS-U-M-EXCELLENT-/260865851244?pt=UK_Stamps_ROWStamps&hash=item3cbcd0ff6c

You could also buy these toy trains, second hand on places like ebay or charity shops, paint them and make them into your centre pieces with flowers or candles. or fill them with sweets/mints for each table or on a sweetie buffet if you are having one?

you could also do a Mr and Mrs sign using these....

use this sort of thing for table numbers...

use these for wine charms or favours?

What about names of people who invented different types of trains for table names?

My OH loves minis and one of our ideas at the moment is having people associated with minis as the table names. We're also thinking that we will have a quiz for our guests to do and one of the questions could be to see if anyone knows what the table names mean.

AJ, I knew somewhere i'd seen on hitched that someone was an anorak! Was it you pondering about train themed stag?

The part that i'm struggling with is that a lot of the wedding is planned. As I said before I was anti-train and banned it from the wedding. Then last night it struck me that it would be nice to involve his hobby in the wedding. Especially since for the last 6 and 1/2 years i've dissed him for it.

    Here's what we've got:-

    *Church
    *Reception Venue
    *Wedding Car
*TOG (not that he matters in this)
    *Table centrepieces/chair covers
*Invites (i've made them, and couldn't really add trains into them. Also as Mrs C said it would give the game away.)

I'm more thinking of decoration type things I could add into the mix, so I wouldn't have to change much of what we have now.

You've got the North Yorkshire Moors Railway not that far I guess - they do 'diesel driver experience' days ("Silver diesel days /footplate) although they aren't cheap... don't know whether family might be willing to club together to buy that as a treat?

Do you know if he has a 'favourite' type of train, region, company, manufacturer, time period? That might help me come up with some suggestions, particularly colours.

Given that BR Mk 1 carriages have up to 12 windows so you could possibly have some sort of table plan like a train (it'd be long and thin, obviously) with people's names in each window for where they are sitting?

You could also give the Best Man a railway whistle to 'call peoples attention' perhaps?

Oh my days, why can I not think outside the box like you lot!

How amazing (for him) would it be to have a photoshoot in all our gear on a train track! Funnily enough we have a heritage railway under 10 minutes down the road! His best man also helps run a heritage railway, but that's 3 hours away. I'm rather quite excited now, just to see the look on his face. Just hope I can pull it off. Think I need to start sweet talking some heritage railways for the use of their trains and track.

Great theme and no reason why you can't still have a luxurious classic feel to the wedding - you could look at the styling of the Simplon Orient Express or British Pullman or Northern Belle for ideas - they're very beautiful and romantic.

I'll get back to you on this AJ. I know he has a favourite, so need to do some research. He used to volunteer at NYMR, he's actually a life member but never goes anymore.

Awwww how sweet! Have you thought about getting actual model trains and writing on them? You would probably need a marker pen that can write on glass (we did this for writing on a perspex board and they worked brilliantly!) and you could have the train as the centrepiece and write the table number/name on the carriage or nose of the train? Or maybe have people writie on the trains as an alternative guest book?

Model railways are not a cheap hobby so that could work out quite expensive - however your local model railway shop should have some cheap second hand bits that you could buy - a small open wagon, for example, should only cost a few pounds each. You could then get someone to spray the bodies over in your wedding colour scheme and do something with it.

If you can't find anyone willing I may be able to do something - I'd only ask you to cover the costs of purchasing the materials, and postage.

Thanks AJ, you're being a big help ? Of all the places, I never thought i'd find an anorak on Hitched! ? It's all good though.

I like the idea of having open wagons on the tables filled with a few sweets. We were going to have a sweetie table, but decided against it. OH likes his model trains and has quite a bit of track up in the void. May I could lay a small circle of track around the centrepieces for the wagons to sit on? Then people could easily move them round. Do you reckon this would be doable? Think he has some wagons up there too. Do you think they would look ok sprayed different colours? And is it easy to do for the likes of a novice (like me)? I know they come in a variety of colours, my colour scheme is green & ivory.

Still waiting for a reply from BM in regards to OH train preferences ?

You could use a circle of radius 2 setrack but that's almost 3ft diameter - assuming you're talking OO scale (Hornby stuff - what most people think of). Wagons full of sweets might work.

I would caution against respraying any of his existing stock without permission though - what might look like a tatty old wagon to most people might be an extremely rare vintage item worth hundreds of pounds. You're probably better off going down the track (!!!) of second hand mixed open wagons like these - which won't fit a huge amount of sweets th

Even just 5 wagons x 10 tables you're looking at maybe £150-£200 which is a lot to spend on something that isn't necesarily much use afterwards - although of course many people spend a lot more on their table decorations.

Spraying is not easy - even using spray cans from a car shop, you have to take the body off, then prepare, prime, spray (possibly more than once).

We had green and ivory - see our website in signature for more details - but what shade of green are you having? It may or may not work to match his favourite company's colours with them. Railmatch Paints cover pretty much every shade of paint that's been slapped on something railway related since Stephenson's Rocket up to today's garish technicolour monstrosities.

Let's see what his favourite train/time period/region is and we'll go from there Smiley smile
