Wedding venue help!!

Nicole, 21 February, 2022 at 10:59 Posted on Planning 0 5
Hello,

We have recently got engaged and needing help with deciding a venue- it’s making me really stressed out!
We live in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire but love the thought of a town hall and pub/bar reception. I can’t really find any venues in Hertfordshire that are like this and mostly in London.
How far away are everyone’s venues? My parents think that it will be too much of a fuss going travelling into London (1hr travel time) to set up, clean up after the wedding etc. I do see this point, but I can’t find any venues near us that I want to go and see!

Our venue is 1h15m away. I think people are prepared to travel for weddings, as long as wherever you pick has hotels nearby if people want to stay then it is fine. I guess if you are planning to do a DIY reception your mum has a point but if you can find an all in one venue and they manage it, or where you can have suppliers come in and you dont have to clean up then you will be fine

Our venue is an 8 hour round-trip drive away and we are having to go up monthly for Church services so I definitely think Hertfordshire to London is doable if that is what you have your heart set on. If you need to clean up after the wedding, perhaps is worth staying somewhere nearby the night of?

We’re driving just short of 2hrs for our venue, and our friends are scattered with anything between a 1hr and 5hr drive. Our families will have about a 1.5hr drive and both aren’t bothered.

I guess it depends on size of wedding, what your family dynamic is, what you and your closest people deem as far etc.I set a time limit and mileage limit up front (my other half doesn’t drive so we agreed I’d set the limit) and then we only looked at venues within that range. We happened to fall in love with the one furthest away, but everyone we’re inviting is loving the idea of getting away for a couple of days (summer wedding on Anglesey though, may have a part to play in it).
If you’re only loving venues further away, then maybe see what it is about those venues you like and that may help narrow down your search for something closer, but ultimately if your favourite venue is over an hour away, your nearest and dearest will likely travel for it, and it may help keep the rest of the numbers down for those that won’t consider it! Their loss after all!

We're getting married at Loch Lomond and live in Norfolk, with most of our family in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire... We were worried that the distance might put people off, but we got our invites out early and everyone has responded pretty positively so far.

Provided you have time to prepare, even DIY should be okay - you just need to be organised, and give your guests plenty of notice about the distance. You could even offer them some ideas if they want to stay over, and do a little research on nearby places.

Lots of venues will be happy for you to clean up the next day as well, so it's worth asking.

Thank you all to have responded, we fell in love and decided to go with a venue that is 15 mins away from us!
