Wedding Venues in Glasgow (or thereabouts!)

WeeFace, 30 September, 2008 at 20:31 Posted on Planning 0 45

Hiya,

I'm having a bit of trouble finding somewhere to hold my Wedding - We are only planning on having a small Wedding, with roughly 20 people at the sit down meal (Family) and another 60 at the evening reception, however it's difficult to find anywhere that will cater for that number of guests - Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to hitched. I can't really suggest anywhere specific unfortunately but have you tried restaurants instead of big wedding venues that have min numbers? A restaurant may well be able to section part off and then use their function hall for night time.

My neighbour got married with a small wedding party as well and just booked somewhere for a meal across from the ceremony venue and then they moved to another restaurant/pub that had a function hall for night time and they served a buffet at night.

I live just outside Glasgow so only know Lanarkshire venues.

Edited to say after reading this back it makes no sense at all but I know what I mean so hopefully you can figure it out as well! ?

    House for an Art Lover

    Sherbrooke Castle

    St.Andrews in the Square

Corinthian hold wedding receptions as does Arta.

The National Piping Centre (one of my favourite venues in Glasgow)

One Devonshire Gardens (Hotel Du Vin) - Very luxurious, worked a wedding there just last week and it was great.

Hilton Grosvenor West End (This has a number of rooms and definitely has something for your numbers)

The Peoples Palace/Winter Gardens would suit those numbers.

    OUTWITH GLASGOW

Dalziel Park, Motherwell - Has a second smaller suite ideal for your numbers

    Forrest Hills Hotel, Aberfoyle

Hilton Strathclyde (Belshill) - I think they could accomodate you.

Glynhill, Paisley - Their function suite can be sectioned to make a smaller suite.

Solsgirth House - One of my favourite private house venues.

    Inchyra Grange

Glenskirlie - Both the castle and house are suitable.

There are honestly loads of smaller venues or larger venues that can divide their suites.

Good Luck with it all. If you need any specific info about one of the venues, let me know.

Just another thought when is your wedding? I know my venue doesn't allow any non meal parties (if that is the right way to phrase it) in wedding peak season (April - Sept) on Saturdays so I assume most other venues are like that. They have a min number of 80 for the meal but do have a separate restaurant.

Debs has made some great suggestions so hopefully something will suit.

Whereabouts in Glasgow are you based?? ?

Pollok House is a nice size and still has gorgeous grounds etc for the ceremony but I'm not sure if they also do evening receptions ? .... (if you're interested you could PM me - I have some footage from a wedding I filmed there recently I could show you) There are some really nice restaurants where you could get married too, Cottiers, or Oran Mor in the West End ... or what about inside the botanic garden greenhouses, or the people's palace?? the maid of the loch on loch lomond? with a party at night at Duck Bay Marina? I also worked at a wedding at the City Chambers recital room which was absolutely beautiful but maybe a bit too big for what you're looking for.. http://www.glasgowconcerthalls.com/roomdetails/room/41

Oran Mor have a minimum numbers requirement sadly. It's not a restaurant though (it has a restaurant but there are 3 floors. The auditorium at the top is where the weddings are held.

I should have said actually that we got married at Park Circus, had a meal for 26 in L'Ariosto in Mitchell Street, followed by drinks at Malmaison and then threw a party in Cube the following night. But you could always do the retaurant thing and book a private evening party at all sorts of venues (Arta, Corinthian etc.) for the same night. No need for buses taxi's between restaurant and venue that way.

Wow! Thanks very much for all those suggestions!! I'm going to look at them all and see what they offer - I'm finding it kinda hard to get somewhere, mainly because of my numbers (The reason I started this post!) but also because we don't want somewhere right in the middle of Glasgow as we both work in town and so would like to get married elsewhere so that it's special but in saying that, if we go for somewhere a bit further out we have the problem of evening guests not coming as it's to far/they need transport!!?

    Hi weeface,

My venue is just off the M74 so although out of Glasgow is dead easy to get to and from Glasgow city centre it is only 20 mins away. My h2b has family in Glasgow and we live in Lanarkshire so wanted something in Lanarkshire but not a million miles away for his family. I'm a bit funny about posting my venue in case there are any weird people around (it has been known on Hitched ages ago) so drop me an email if you want to know any more - ******@**************.**.**.

Well then definitely start with House For an Art Lover. One of the best and most beautiful venues in Glasgow - it's outside of the city centre, close enough though to not worry about transport, lovely grounds and the function manager is great. The Mackintosh Suite might seem a little odd at first glance but believe me it's a whole different story when it's dressed for a wedding (the windows are stunning). It's a funky, atmospheric and quirky space.

Oooh, I'm quite excited for you!

Ebee, don't be apologising. Pity me. I only know about the Oran Mor set up because H is there up to 70 hrs a week. I have to feign interest to keep my "Great Wife" medal. ?

Hey Wee Face! I'm in Edinburgh so can't be much help with Glasvegas but I do have a copy of the Scottish Wedding Directory Venue Guide - if you would like it let me know and I'll get in the post to you tomorrow. Although the girls have been more than helpful already so you probably don't need it!

I just got married at house for an art lover (I'll do my report soon - honest!) and it really was lovely and the staff are wonderful & really helpful. We found it to be pretty good value & the food is delicious. They have a minimum numbers policy for Fridays & Saturdays but not for other days and we got married on a Sunday to avoid this.

It is quite distinctive (Mackintosh) but we felt that it made it a bit different to the norm for wedding venues. The Music room where you eat could easily be set up well for 20 people, although it can hold a lot more, as it's a narrow room so wouldn't look empty. The Cafe Bar where the evening reception is held is quite small too so would suit your numbers. The fact that it's at the edge of Bellahouston Park means it doesn't look like it's in the middle of the city but it's still really easy to get to.

Thanks! Quite a few people have recommended that we check this venue out so I think it might be worthwhile going to have a look round! On their website I see they kinda have fixed menus (where you have to pick a course from an option of two) Did you have to make changes to these options and if so, were they quite willing to accommodate this? Also, we were considering getting married on a Sunday (again the number thing & most places seem to charge a bit less for a Sunday) I was worried though about people being put off as the reception would be a Sunday night, did you feel it made a difference to your guests?

I forgot there's also the winter gardens in Glasgow green ... my brother got married there and it was really lovely for the ceremony and then all lit up at night (not sure if they would have minimum numbers for the meal though ?

They were very flexible with the menus. I offered my guests a choice of 2 starters/mains/desserts plus veggie options with the invitations which was a mix of menu A&B & then gave them numbers 2 weeks before. They will pretty much do most things - we asked for a few changes to the courses after we had a tasting e.g. replacing mustard mash with plain mash, adding oatcakes to a course etc.

Sunday was fine for us as most of our guests could take the Mon off work & those who had to travel would have had to take the Fri off if we got married on a Sat anyway. The best man is a teacher in Edinburgh so we chose the weekend around the Edinburgh Sept bank hol weekend. We also sent out Save the dates so it meant that most people knew when it was 9 months in advance.

The only thing to note if you get married in Glasgow on a Sunday is that you can't get a registrar as they won't/don't work on Sundays. So you would have to have a religious minister/humanist celebrant. We had a humanist celebrant & it was the best decision we made. Everyone loved the ceremony. *sigh- I'm sad it's over*

Thanks for advising me on the bit about not being able to get a registrar on a Sunday - I didn't even think about what days they would be available, just assumed that they'd be available whenever!! This might be a stupid question but what's the difference between a registrar and a humanist celebrant? I'm really not clued up at all on this kinda stuff!! ?

Both humanist & civil ceremonies are secular (ie no religious meaning allowed) but generally speaking you get to be a lot more personal in choosing things for a humanist ceremony. We wrote the ceremony ourselves with a lot of help from the humanist celebrant & it included personal things about us and reflected us as a couple. I don't think you get the opportunity to do this with a civil ceremony as I don't think you get chance to meet the registrar until the day (I might be wrong about this). Our celebrant asked us to email him individually some info on how we met & why we wanted to get married/what we loved about each other. He then put that together & we didn't hear it until the day itself. It was a really nice touch.

Humanist ceremonies are legally binding in Scotland (but not in Eng/Wales) & you can actually have one anywhere at all inc outside - it doesn't have to be one of the 'approved buildings'.
There is more info here : https://www.humanism.scot

Hey, a couple of people have now reccommended the peoples palace/winter gardens as a venue so I went on their website but couldn't really find out that much about it - Do you know where abouts the meal/reception would be held in this venue? If it was in the Winter Gardens, that would be lovely... and great for photos!!

Another thing to bear in mind is that registrars in Glasgow also don't work the saturday of bank holiday weekends.

My brother got married at the winter gardens and they just had the meal in the middle courtyard area of the glasshouse - it was lovely ... then they cleared all the tables and had the dance in the middle. if you go online they have a virtual tour (follow the link to the caterers website) i think ?

Thanks guys!! The idea of having the meal & the reception in the winter garden sounds really nice!! The only thing is (and maybe I'm being just a bit lazy ? ) the packages that some of the venues offer sounds more straight forward than having to do the planning ourselves .... Does anyone know what the caterers provide - is it just the meal?

I can't remember exactly how my brother organised it, but it's council owned so I think it was pretty much all done for them - why not give them a ring and ask?? ?

also there are lots of local hitchers who can help you out with planning and suppliers ?

    WebeeS.

When I've worked there, the meal and buffet were catered for. I don't know about linen hire and such like though. Definitely call them.

The only downsides to the winter gardens is lack of onsite parking and in the summer months it remains incredibly bright throughout the evening with no way to set a night time type of atmosphere.

If possible, get your entertainent to set up prior to the meal and don't hire any staging through the venue as it's a small fortune and totally unecessary.

Colzium House in Kilsyth is beautiful. Council owned so you can get your on caterers in and there's no worry about numbers or anything.

We had a Humanist wedding and if you are not religious it would be well worth looking into. Very personal and gave us the chance to make the ceremony really "us". We got married the Saturday of the September Weekend and it didn't cost any extra, she was also willing to do the Sunday either if we'd wanted (unlike registrars who couldn't do it on the Sat without charging extra).

makes for a much better wedding video though ? nothing worse than a dimly lit first dance ?!!!

To the OP though, I really think your best bet is to go and visit a few places and see if you like them ? and if you need any help with other suppliers just shout!

Well let's see.... a word I could use to describe what we though of Glenskirlie ? ...... WOW!!! ? We both loved it!! The house was lovely and the castle was amazing!! For our numbers though, we'd need to go for the house but we'd still get the best of both worlds as we'd get to go to the castle too as that's where the rooms are! We're having a wee think about it as we need to look properly at our budget but I'll keep you posted!! ? Pretty sure we've found our venue though....
