I have used the free website too on hitched but when someone confirms attendance it asks for their meal choice - how do you remove this?

If you go to the planning side of the hitched website (not your wedding site) then go > to your guest list > wedding breakfast > then hit settings. You then need to unselect/untick the menu option.
This then removes the drop down menu when guests RSVP via your wedding website.
I hope this helps.
