What are people's thoughts on P-plates?

I've FINALLY passed my test - Hoorah! When I got home I found that my lovely thoughtful H had put P-plates on the car in acknowledgement. I wasn't planning to have them as I'm not sure what I think of them and wonder whether their usefulness is equal to that of BOB signs. I also don't see many...

I wasn't planning to have them as I'm not sure what I think of them and wonder whether their usefulness is equal to that of BOB signs. I also don't see many around. Also, because I'm in London where many drivers are impatient and mean to you when they see L-plates, I was sort of looking forward to driving without anything to show my exact status as a driver so that at least I might be given my right of way occasionally.

He probably thinks I'm a crap driver is concerned for my safety and is just being cautious so I've left them on for now.

So what do we think of them? Useful or not? As a driver, how do you react to them?

Along with knitting, holding the roof on because it's sure to blow off. Same with the door - holding it closed with their elbows.

And don't even get me started on the women over here who run their social lives while driving, holding their mobiles in one hand while writing with the other with their kids in the back. Drives me nuts! I don't see it every day. I see it every 5 minutes!

I think it's sensible to have them, and I actually think that it should be a legal requirement to display them for a certain amount of time after passing your test.

I had them on my car for about a month after passing my test. The only noticeable difference I noticed between when I had them on and not was the lorry drivers on the motorway. I found that they were very good at letting me know when I could pull in in front of them and were "nice" to me unlike without them when sometimes they will push out into you forcing you in to the next lane.
