What are the wooden circles called??

Flukey35, 2 August, 2012 at 12:38 Posted on Planning 0 23

At the risk of sounding a real numpty I can't search for what I want until I know the name of them.

I'm looking for a wooden slice of tree, ie a circle with the bark still on that I can put my centre pieces on.

Do these have a particular name?

Thanks a lot

    Tree slice or tree slab?

Both seem to get results on etsy (so I assume that's what they get called!)

    Like these? ?

These are table numbers I did for a Hitcher.

There aren't that many around to buy unfortunately.

How did you get on for your search for 'wooden slices' as i qute like that idea too now ?

Ive only seen them on etsy and they seem quite expensive for what they are really. x

Why don't you try speaking to a local tree surgeon, bet they will have them coming out of their ears!

Where abouts are you flukey? I contacted a tree surgeon who is in the process of cleaning sanding blah blah a cherry tree for me. We're using it for our cheese stack. If you PM me your email address I could pass it on?

He is Cambridge area, I guess he could post but might be expensive.

OMG - these look perfect - and stone so will stop people nicking them and I can put them in my garden afterwards.

    You're a star - Thank you.

For anyone else interested I live in Derbyshire and was going to have a word with a local timber merchant to see what they could do.

    You girls are FAB.

Hi ladies, well thanks to everyones tips I now have loads of tree slices drying in my dads cellar!! I went to a local tree surgeon and he gave me them for free! Well I had to force him to take a tenner for a pint or two ha. Cant wait to see them when there all dried out. I may give them a once over with bee's wax. Never thought i'd get so excited about pieces of wood ha x

Sorry to bump an old post, but have just come across this idea on etsy and it would really suit my daisy/forest theme!

I have little wicker basket candle holders which would sit ontop of a piece off wood perfectly as a centrepiece.

When you spoke to your local tree surgeon what exactly did you ask for? Like did he cut them up into 'slices' for you or just give you a log lol?!

Any help greatly appreciated I LOVE this idea!!! I'm Colchester Essex if that helps Smiley smile xxxxxxx

Hello, its a lovely idea isnt it. I asked for tree 'slices' and explained what i wanted them for and said about 3 inches thick. Its perfect timing that you are getting some - would you mind asking the tree surgeon a question for me when you go, it will help you too....... basically ive had the slices drying out for about 3 months, when i first got them they were a lovely colour but now they look a bit old and dirty. I was going to sand them and maybe put some wood treatment on them. So ....... im guessing yours will do the same - maybe mention it to the tree surgeon and see if he can suggest how to stop that? (if you dont mind) xx

Yeah I don't know how to avoid it, you can't use them straight away as the tree sap is wet. Ill give them a sand and see what they come up like. Xx

My Dad does wood turning so I know a little bit about drying lumps of wood! You have to keep them somewhere dry but not too hot or they crack (less likely with slices) plus I think it helps to have a few gaps so the air can circulate. He's got loads in their porch (no heating) and a few more in the garage. He also has a wood kiln for the special bits but managed well for about 2 years without. I know when a bowl or whatever is finished he oils them but I'm not sure what with possibly teak oil.

Katie, I think yours have got a bit damp but if you clean and sand them they should be fine. Have you got somewhere drier you can keep them or a dehumidifier for the cellar? Once they've dried out a bit then you can then oil/wax them but I think you need to wait until they're drier.

You aren't going to stop the bark falling off unfortunately either. It's probably easier to buy some that have already been treated and ready.

Thanks for the advice folks. Ive moved a few into my log basket in the lounge so there quite dry now. Im going to give the sanding a go and may get some oil then, thank your dad for the tip!.

The only place I can find them ready done so to speak is on Etsy and they cost an fortune :-( Ill keep trying to get these sorted. Ive got a while to play with them yet. x
