What do i do?

Joanne, 19 September, 2020 at 02:35 Posted on Planning 0 6
I just booked my wedding.. perfect date, perfect time but in my impulsiveness I booked it without asking what was included in the price! I feel like such an idiot! It only occurred after my family ushered me to ask.. am I being silly or is 1k for just a registry office wedding for 100 people too much?? I can't decorate the room either i might add. And its only two registers and a marriage certificate. I'm scared to ring up and cancel as I'll lose my £100 deposit as its non refundable. Excuse my French but FML !!

So its just a long room with standard chairs, there will be two flowers either side of the front table... when I've looked at it with clear eyes, its not worth 1k tbh. We've just looked at a church near us and its 500 cheaper and it just looks so beautiful and we can add flowers down the aisles. Add our own touch.

If you've found a venue you prefer that's £500 cheaper, then you can afford to switch as even losing your depost, you'll still be £400 better off. But do think it through first. For example, because a church ceremony is a religious one, many/most churches will expect you to do some kind of marriage prep/pre-marriage counselling course before marrying there. Not that this is a bad thing - I think it's a great idea for everyone to run through some kind of marriage prep - but if that's something you're not happy with, then the church might not be right for you. Also, while you can't have any religious readings/music at a registry office, many churches impose restrictions on what non-religious music/readings you can have. So you really need to think about the type of service you want and also find out what restrictions/expections there are before switching to the church.

    Agree with the above.

For our legal ceremony we're still moving forward hopefully this year - they currently have reduced rates (60% less!)

So it might be worth seeing if anywhere is offering discounts at the moment!

There could be other costs with the Church, apart from some flowers ( which may cost more than you think ) depending on the time of year you may have to pay extra for heating. Also bell ringers / choir/ organist. And you will be required to attend services for a number of weeks.

The type of music in the Church is very much dependant on the individual vicar/priest although most like to stick to the traditional for the main ceremony, when it comes to music during the signing of the register I have heard many different non religious music and songs. Also walking out of the church can be a time when the celebrant is a little more relaxed about the music.

Also the flowers in the register office sound like they are theirs and get used all day but if you pay for big pedestal displays in the Church it is usually expected that you leave them there for the Church.

The Church will usually be a better option for photos afterwards if you do not have a reception planned. Some register offices have nice gardens but you will have another wedding coming out very soon behind you pushing you along.

Also, don’t forget that if it’s a Catholic Church you’ll still need a registrar to be there at the ceremony (Church of England can do it themselves) and cost of a registrar for a week day for me was £400+ on top of the church fees, flowers, organist. Our pre marriage course was £150. I think you should stick with your current option.
