What don't you like at weddings?

*Mini*, 30 March, 2013 at 17:56

Its been ages since we did one of these and we have lots of lovely new shiny Hitchers to join in! So the question is what don't you like at weddings? Chair Covers? Horse Drawn Carriages? Men in top hats? could be anything. The fun is to see what you have that others don't like and vice versa. I will...

So the question is what don't you like at weddings? Chair Covers? Horse Drawn Carriages? Men in top hats? could be anything. The fun is to see what you have that others don't like and vice versa.

I will start;

Matching grooms/ushers/father of the bride

Cravats

Sweetie buffets

Balloons.

Your go.....

    Cadbury purple.

Gift/money requests in invitations, poem or not.

    Faux church weddings.

'Quirky' bride shoes (and anyway, Converse/DMs are too commonly worn to qualify as 'quirky').

    Hog roasts.

My biggest issue is when couples agree to get married and do it themselves to save money and then try to rope in family to do literally all the long winded stuff for them including arranging stuff on the day, moving stuff on the day, making nearly everything by hand for the couple and transporting people on the day.

Surely, this no longer makes you a guest?

    - plain wedding dresses

    - wedding dresses with a bit of colour in them

    - children making noise during ceremony/speeches and not being taken out by parents and/or whipped.

    - tiaras that look like crowns

I think this is one of the nicest thngs of all! Maybe because I'm part of a large family and we're all spread out around the country, so it's lovely to be asked to be involved!

I have to say that there isn't much I don't like at weddings: what works well for one wedding doesn't always for the next, but I'm choosing things I particularly like rather than not choosing things I don't, if that makes sense! ?

There are many things I am not choosing for my wedding.

But really really hate? Things involving animals (bar in their working/ assisting capacity)

Rude 'guests' (who loudly complain about many things like children, but as this is usually just one of many charms they are usually too racist, sexist, agist, sizist to be invited to family and friend gatherings, so blissfully seem to be happening less and I say 'guests' because you KNOW they were only invited under sufferance !)

I love being surprised at weddings though - the new stuff can be lovely, (just without the above). That is all.

Going to a wedding as a single person and being dumped off at a rear table near the toilets with a bunch of people you have never met

...then being subjected to an organised bouquet throw

Receiving an invitation with the wedding list or something asking for money included in the envelope

Having to wait through a long photo shoot outside in the cold

One of the parents of the bride/groom asking you who you are

Going to the evening reception when no tables or chairs have been allocated to anyone who did not attend the wedding

    Plastic gems on the tables

    Mirrors under vases

    Freezing cold churches

    Balloons used as centrepieces

    Too much formality

    Out of control children

Budget D.J.'s that have no idea what they should be playing as nobody is on the dancefloor

People that won't get up and dance (regardless of budget d.j- get up and have some fun !)

Venues that charge ridiculous bar prices

    Wedding Guest Books

    Net bags of sugared almonds

Buying a new outfit for the occasion and having a wardrobe malfunction

    Cor...that's a long list :-)

Canon in D. Also known as Pachelbel's Canon. The most boring piece of classical music ever (in my cabbage) but inexplicably popular. I gave my string quartet free rein to play whatever they liked before the ceremony until I arrived, as long as it wasn't THAT!

    Other things:

Money poems. Or any other poems.

That dinosaur reading (A Lovely Love Story).

Long gap between ceremony and reception meal. Especially if only one glass of bubbly available.

Anyone talking about being a princess or a celebrity.

    Anything involving animals, especially dogs.

Crystals/pearls/confetti on tables. It's messy and I end up stacking it all up/grouping them together!

    - Balloons - people don't realise this but helium is one of the earth's most limited resources and it has important medical applications, so why we're allowed to use it at parties I don't know.

    - Money poems

    - "You may now kiss the bride" and/or when the bride and groom seal the marriage by slipping each other the tongue

    - Late weddings - I mean I love all weddings but I feel like everything comes to an end just as you really start enjoying yourself

    - Cheese instead of cake

    - DJs who play what they want and don't play requests even if the dance floor is empty

    - "Summer of '69", "Gonna Be 500 Miles", "Amarillo"

    - Fake tan

    - Money poems

    - Bacon sandwiches/Hog roasts- I'm vegetarian and the smell of cooking pig was the first thing I went off. 20 years later it still turns my stomach.

Orrrrrr. Not even when it's read by a teacher? In Jackanory fashion? In a manner that suggests a particularly stupid class? It's one of my fave wedding video bits, a little bit because it's so stupid. And my BM cries a bit at the end Smiley smile

Oooh THATS canon!!! yes its, er, not my thing.

okay to chirp in again, yes to no fake tan (i'm a ghost!) and i partly agree on dress with some colour. Even though mine has colour is a soft shade, very light purple, but I'm not a fan of the bright blood red or navy you get on most of them.

    Moi?

A church wedding where the couple don't believe in god. A church wedding simply to please a family or to get nice photos. A church wedding where the couple have to ask advice on which hymns or readings to have because they don't have clue about church things.

ha. One of the first conversations I had with my boy was (obviously when we reached *that* stage) was I absolutely cannot get married in a church. Non-negotiable. And my mum would probably refuse to come if I did. I loved our civil ceremony, and not so long that anyone got bored. It was just about us, no third person/imaginary being etc.

I really wanted to post a photo of what I believe is the worst wedding dress in the world (as in a "serious" wedding dress) but was scared somebody might have it here. It seemed to be so popular as saw it in so many wedding dress shops (and I went to a lot).

Don't really understand the "formal sit-down dinner" being on the list.

What's not to like about three courses of food??!!?

I think the point of the thread is to disagree with each other, so no harm in voicing our own opinions.

Clarehj, I would love to see the dress you consider to be the ugliest wedding dress out there. I have to admit I hate most wedding dresses I see, and I know lots of brides also have very particular taste when it comes to wedding dresses Smiley smile
