I was going to be Sian, Emma, Katie or Sophie. Apparently my parents really couldn't agree and it was a long debate! None of those names really suit me apart from Emma but it really doesn't work with my surname. If l was a boy then l would have been called Liam. Our surname is long so my Mum thought short first names would be good.

I was going to be Ben. In fact, my parents were so convinced that I was going to be a boy, they didn't even bother thinking of any girls' names. So, I was nameless until my Dad went to the hospital shop to get my Mum a magazine to read.

Whilst perusing the shelves, he spotted 'Marie Claire' magazine. He said to Mum, "What about Marie Claire?". Mum said, "Don't be stupid, you can't name a child after a women's magazine". Dad replied, "Oh. How about 'Claire Marie'?". Mum, "Yeah, that's better. Claire Marie it is!"

    Stupid parents.

When my friend was born her parents couldn't think of a name, so her dad opened the paper that day, the page 3 girl's name was Allison. Job done....

My parents liked Ursula, but my grandmother said it would be shortened to "Urs" so I have it as one of my middle names instead.

It's after Ursula Brangwen in "Women in Love" - my dad was a great fan of D H Lawrence.

If I'd been a boy it would have been Thomas (after my grandfather) Sebastian (After J S Bach)

I was going to be Victoria. Which, for those of you who know my name, is about as conventional as you could get!

I was Katie Louise up into 2 days before I was born when my Dad heard my name in the pub. I would have been Peter if I was a boy but I married one instead.

I would have been James if I was a boy. I think my parents were always set on Laura though, although I think Olivia was an option but my dad didn't like it because my mum's mum is Olive. I can't imagine being an Olivia!

I like it! Can be shortened to 'Dani'. Which is spunky.

Well my parents were certain I was a boy and having two older brothers, I was going to share a bedroom with the younger of the two.. so they redecorated his bedroom baby blue with penguins and polar bears (my brother would have been 7, the other 9 when I was born)...and my name was all planned to be Benjamin James. Only I was born a girl and they had no girl names planned ?

So my dad decided my name on the spot. ? Then ate all the toast which was supposed to be for my mum. ?

ETA: Some people assume I'm Jay Smiley winking, I'm not that's the O/H.

    I'm a Stephanie.

Quite literally, when one considers its use as rhyming slang for 'fanny'. (Sorry, ER)

My mum wanted to call me Blue, or Tuesday (hey why not shove em together as Blue Tuesday?!).

Luckily dad persuaded her otherwise. I wish they had been brave enough to use my middle name as my first (Anya) but worried I would sound too German (with my maiden name, I can see their point about sounding German, but I don't think it's a bad thing).

I was Karen for 3 days, then my mum decided I didn't look like a Karen (I don't really know what a Karen looks like) and perhaps they would save that name in case their next daughter looked more like a Karen (she obviously didn't because she's a Claire). My God Father chose my name because my mother was too busy being petulant that I'd dare to arrive and not look like my name and my dad wanted me to be a Gillian, which I didn't look like either. I'm still not convinced they're entirely settled on my name yet because I don't remember them ever calling me Fiona, I've been Fee as long as I can remember. H2B is the only one who ever uses my proper name.
