What food is good for binding? (a bit TMI)

WelshTotty, 21 January, 2009 at 16:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

To top it all not only do I have the coughing lurgy from hell, sore muscles from coughing and not much sleep, the antibiotics have affected my stomach and (TMI) I also have a case of the squits. great.

Now my apetite isnt very good, but I have to eat an hour after taking the antibiotics, so I'm trying my best, I've not got much grub in me but whatever is there doesn't stay long before I'm running to the loo.

So what can I eat that will help the situation? Something that will hopefully bind me a bit. I've had an egg today already and a small bowl of plain pasta.

    Definitely banana!

Fresh orange juice works for me to but the rest of my family think I'm crazy and it has the opposite effect. It doesn't.

The (flat) Yorkshire puddings I cooked last week. They would bind the most loose of guts!

You're really going through it at the moment WT. Hope you're better soon ?

    Hi WT!!!

Ive heard black strong tea can help the 'binding process' - hope you feel better soon lovely!! fancy a trip to Bath when you get rid of all your germs?

I have to say I laughed at your last post about not knowing if you're gonna pee or poo. I have felt that before and its so awful! Not laughing at you, but with you ?

Hiya Annie. Yes when Im better and actually in the land of the living and not in fear of being too far from a toilet another trip to Bath may well be on the cards, see if we can manage it on a dry day next time!

Strong black tea is something Ive not heard of before either, only problem being we dont have any tea in the house as neither of us drink it and just the smell of it makes me feel sick. I dont want to add to what Ive got already between coughing, aching, peeing and pooing then being sick too, I dont think my toilets could take the pressure lol!

Ah, thats a no to the tea then. With my nutritional advisor hat on, remember that the runs cause a depletion of intestinal 'good' bacteria, so may be worth buying some activia yoghurts or something like that which can help you replace those. Also keep drinking to avoid dehydration. Remember that after the runs its common to get the opposite! There is a word to remember to help diarrhea which is BRATTY, Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea, Toast and yoghurt!

Hope you get better soon darling!

Oh BRATTY sounds good (except for the tea bit) Im drinking lots of water as its helping the cough so dehydration shouldnt be a problem, and Ive always got a stock of actimel so that should help, Mr WT can get me some nanas and maybe some activia tomorrow.

Thanks chick, mucho helpo you have beeno!?

I sometimes see people with stomas/ colostomies and we advise them to eat jelly babies/ marshmallows to 'firm up' their output, whether that works for people with a normal functioning gut is a different story.

The yoghurts that are probiotic generally don't have enough bacteria to do a lot of benefit. You're better off with Yakult or Danone Actimel drink, ideally getting pre- and pro-biotics into you (pre-biotics are the food that the good bacteria in your gut feeds on).

The last time I was antibiotics they caused everything to go straight through and nothing I tried could fix that problem. Luckily those affects of the tablets wore off after a few days.

Z, its deffo the antiBs that have given me the squits, its one of the side effects mentioned. Im going to try to see if I can eat to help , but if I cant then I know that once Im finished taking them I should be ok.

The things youre given to make you better make you 10 times worse first!
