What Glue? - Homemade invitations

Jo.1981, 17 May, 2008 at 12:25 Posted on Planning 0 22

So started making invitations last night and they look really good, but I'm worried that the glue is not strong enough to hold the 1 thistle and bow on in the post (don't want people to open their invitation to find that it has fallen apart, I practiced with PVA but last night I used a craft prit stick type thing. What glue did you use/recommend? Thanks in advance Oh these are my invitations

Clear superglue? I used copydex on mine but that was just sticking paper onto card and it can leave a lumpy mess if you use it too thickly. I would have thought a dab of superglue would hold it in place.

I'm using a multipurpose clear Bostik craft glue for mine, from Hobbycraft.

I also posted one of my invites to myself to see if anything dropped off it by the time it got to me (luckily it was fine!)

I would use the Bostik, or UHU probably. And double sided tape for the backing bit. We did this for my friends roses and they stuck fine.

I had 3 paper roses on each of my invites and I used glue dots for them and they have held really well.

We would recommend using glue dots e.g. http://www.thehandcraftedcardcompany.co.uk/craft/13-adhesives-and-glues.asp for sticking embellishments onto wedding stationery cards. These work very well. We have found that the best adhesive to use for sticking inserts into invitations, order of service, thank you cards is a Pritt roller e.g. http://www.thehandcraftedcardcompany.co.uk/cardcrafts/174-pritt-roller-adhesive.asp Your invitations look lovely by the way ! Well done.

I would have to agree. I used glule dots on making all of mine and they made it through the post all over the country and abroad in frost and heat!! There are lots of variety of glue dots so make sure you have a look in a stationers or something to get the right size. You don't want massive dots where the glue will be sticking out of the sides. xx

I use a combination of glue dots and double sided tape on my stuff - I find that 'wet' glues make the paper wrinkle.

    Lush invites by the way!

The invites really look lovely- well done!

I'm not very crafty so we've bought our invites, but i would be interested to know what to use on thin paper as I'm going to attempt to make our "order of the day" cards.

Can you let us know if the glue dots or pritt roller thing work without creating bobbles in the paper!

    When's the wedding?

Silicon glue is really very good at holding on 3-D shapes, particularly if they are heavy or uneven. I've used it really successfully to hold on metal embellishments, ribbon and even to bind pages (invitations) together. I also used it to decorate my Moonwalk bra with sequins and not a single one came off after 26 miles!! You can buy it most craft shops like Hobbycraft, Lakeland or www.pdacardandcraft.co.uk it's cheap and you can apply it really precisely with a matchstick or cocktail stick .

I do like glue dots, especially for flat pieces but find them a bit fiddly and inaccurate for 3-d shapes. I think they can work out a bit expensive too if you are using lots, so look out for 3 for 2 deals in places like Hobbycraft and Lakland if you decide to go with them.

YAY invitation survived the post using the cheap 70p craft glue (have invested in some Bostik though) girls at work thought I was very strange sending an invite to myself!

Sorry to fire up this thread again, but have had a look thru' and checked out madabout's info page and can't find advice on the best adhesive for ribbon.

I've tried glue dots on satin ribbon and you get obvious 'bumps' all the way along. I used double sided sticky tape on my own invites and that worked fine apart from it drying out and a few folk saying their ribbon had become to fall away (albeit weeks after the wedding!) ... so it puts me off using it for stationery folk buy from me ...

I tried the PVA glue and that just soaks thru' Satin and leaves a 'clear' mark on the ribbon ....

And I've not tried to glue my organza ribbon yet but any advice welcome!

I used Aleen's Tacky stuff from madaboutcards.co.uk - held up in the post even on the invites to Canada and Singapore! A small bottle goes really far too.

I made my own invites and found glue dots the best for embelishments and good quality double sided tape for ribbon worked really well.

Your invites are lovely BTW, really like the thistle theme!

Hi there Elx, we have developed an online shop with everything from basic craft items, card stock, embellishments, etc, etc. We have also launched a DIY table plan kit as well if you really do feel adventurous - please see Craft Shop for further details. We have also developed a website with advice on wedding stationery - please see Your Wedding Invitation. I hope that this helps. Good luck with the planning ?
