What is formal evening wear for men?

Moglie, 22 August, 2008 at 22:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Is it dinner jacket? What kind of shirt and tie?

Have been invited to a "Venetian Masked Ball" with dress code of formal evening wear and H doesn't know what he should wear.

Any help much appreciated?

Dinner jacket, bow tie and dress shirt. (I would have said Tuxedo, but I got told off for that last time)

Formal evening = black tie unless specified otherwise (very few things are white tie these days unless they involve ancient oxbridge colleges, or buckingham palace)

dinner jacket, trousers, white dress shirt, black bow tie (not ready-tied) OR formal highland dress if scottish

(and my H, who usually knows about these things tells me that normal collar rather than wing-tip is the thing. oh and cufflinks/shirt studs rather than buttons)

Thank you both. I remembered Nick telling BGB that wingtips were out so I passed that on.

Rache, it is as far removed from Buckingham Palace as you can get. It's a birthday party in a community centre "darn sarf" and us northerners are under strict instructions not to show the family up[is there a rolls eyes icon]

H can hire one. He has a creative type job so doesn't ever need any type of suit [sigh]

Erm, also no jokey shirts, cummerbunds, frills down the front of the shirt (unless you're v cool in a retro sort of way), and absolutely no white dinner jackets (even James Bond himself looked like a tw.at in his). Simpler the better. Moss Bros should see him right, though if his weight is stable it's the sort of thing that might be worth buying - MrRache has had his for 8+ years and as it's a classic shape it still looks the business.

He considered buying one but not sure if you remember he had thyroid cancer last year so put lots of weight on and is hoping to lose it when his meds are sorted.

He has to wear a mask too, that should be fun.

He's ok now, sort of. Been ill this past week with weakness, hand tremors, feeling sick and palpitations and thinks his meds dosage may be too high so he's hoping to see somebody next week as I think it's scaring him a little. Thanks for asking.

    Oh poor Mr Moglie

I'm so jealous of my H, his parents bought him full highland dress for his 21st (a good few years ago now) and now if we have to go to anything ever-so-slightly formal the old kilt comes out. The only hardship he is is taking it to the dry cleaners now and then.....whereas I have to find a new outfit every time, pah!
