What is the average cost for a wedding venue deposit?

Kayleigh, 29 April, 2023 at 21:03 Posted on Planning 0 12
Hi all,

How much is the norm? I appreciate that the venue costs will vary place to place, but is it normal to pay 10%/20% or is it what they stipulate? No where gives you their expected deposit prices on their general package prices/brochures. I am in the SW England, and hoping to get married in Scotland. We are likely visiting in the Summer and would like to try and get somewhere secured after we have viewed our list of venues.
Any ideas, so we know exactly what we need to be saving/having to hand would be fab! I know no one can give exact amounts, ball parks would be better than the complete unknown.
Thank you!

Our deposit ended up as 13% of our final bill.

Our venue had a flat rate of £750, which worked out to be about 10% of our final bill. We’re just outside London, and ours was considered a good price for a venue in this area, which makes me assume that other places might have asked for more.

That’s great - thank you! I wasn’t sure how much we’d need to save and if it would be doable to save for a summer deposit with a busy few months ahead. Any answers are always ballparks and will vary but helpful to know rough numbers for others as will likely be similar. Thanks again.

Sure - understood. However, I have no idea where it’ll be and they’re in another country. Was hoping to know rough amounts (understand deposits will vary) as likely will fall into similar brackets. If it’s more than I can save for easily, then I know to do more weekends/overtime to likely have enough to secure. If way out of ability to save for, then I’d not stress and just view when we visit this time.

Yeah. I have tried. We haven’t had much luck with getting many responses. Some send over brochures but with very generic emails. When you reply, you don’t hear back 🫣

We managed to get a really lovely beautiful venue, total cost £2950, deposit £1000. Grabbed it as its nearly fully booked for next year and the date was only free due to them cancelling a concert they'd planned on whats now our date! Think it depends how much you like it and the folks running it. xx

Yeah just to add looking at the other comments, our venue had a brochure so we knew costs of everything in advance of going to view. If you contact them or call any you're interested in they should have similar or be able to email you similar xx

Thats rubbish to hear. IMHO if you are getting responses like that at this stage, they won't be much better (and possibly lots worse!) if you actually book your wedding there. good helpful staff are really important. I'd factor this in as you contact potential venues also xx

Apologies for the lengthy reply but hope it helps!
This would concern me tbh, if they wanted your business they would reply. You wouldn't want the same lack of contact once you've paid a deposit and have queries etc. I know it can be difficult, we are living in NI and planning a trip to the south of England in June to look at venues. It took a fair while to draw up a shortlist based on things like accommodation etc but I started by requesting brochures from any we were remotely interested in that had enough capacity etc. After that I either worked out rough prices myself from the info provided or asked for a rough starting quote as we didn't want to visit anywhere out of budget. I understand venues can be busy and take a few days to respond but any that were dismissive or lacked understanding of our situation were immediately crossed off. There's so much choice we didn't feel the need to settle for bad service.
The ones we are now visiting have been fantastic. Emailed price lists, sent more detailed photos, chatted on the phone and even a virtual tour with one. They were happy to book visits in for us fairly far in advance so that we could book flights although we are aware there is the possibility something may change if they have a last minute event! Sorry I'm not trying to sound smug but just wouldn't want you to be struggling with a venue who isn't communicating with you. Especially when you're not local you really do need a venue that'll work with you and go the extra mile perhaps recommending local suppliers etc.Hope you get sorted and enjoy your trip to look at venues. I'm so excited to visit our selections. Sorry didn't really help with your actual deposit question. The ones that I did get this specific information for....the lowest was £1000 up to 19% of the estimated cost. I think it may be depends on the type of venue/wedding. I don't know what you're looking at but these prices were for exclusive use venues often with accomodation included and sometimes a night before package as we're travelling so far this was important to us xx
