What metal for rings?

Hayley, 10 November, 2021 at 14:43 Posted on Planning 0 10
So, I was thinking white gold, like my engagement ring. However, it seems to tarnish easily and gold is weak.

There's obviously platinum, but this is quite expensive. I've also seen some nice steel ones.
I'd like my ring to last a lifetime.
What have you gone for? What's your opinion? Thanks.

It's difficult isn't it. Could you get something similar design but different colour?

Hey, when I went ring shopping I was advised in the Jewellery shop to get the wedding band in the same metal as my engagement ring as different metals can cause scuffing. I was firstly after a platinum band but my engagement ring is white gold and was told the platinum ring would damage it over time as it is a harder metal. You can also get white gold rings dipped so it's like new again. 🙂

    Hi,
We looked into titanium rings which are definitely cheaper than white gold but still have a great look and weight. As a bonus the metal is very durable and strong. The downside is that it can be difficult to resize and the chain stores don't make them in female sizes.
The tarnishing is bound to happen with gold sadly but it can be replated in rhodium and doesn't seem to cost much from my enquiries.
    Hope this helps

Thank you. I am still working out whether I'll be wearing my rings on the same hand. I would likely need to get my wedding band shaped as my engagement ring is not symmetrical. I feel I won't wear my engagement ring all the time, only for special occasions, so I'm not sure it's worth getting it shaped. I might just wear my engagement ring on my other hand when I do wear it.

My engagement ring is platinum so me and FH are getting platinum. We bought our rings a few weeks ago even though our wedding is next August. When we looked the price of platinum was actually cheaper than gold, so I would be wary of basing too much of your choice on price alone as it will be affected by the market when you buy. I think you need to decide how you’re going to wear your rings as PP have said platinum might damage your white gold engagement ring. At the same time I’d find it annoying to constantly have to pay to have my rings re-dipped.

Thank you. Yeah, the rings I have my eye on are more expensive in 18ct gold than platinum but less in 9ct. Glad you found some you both like already. To wear together, I will definitely have to get it shaped. I'm not sure what wearing that shape on its own though.

Have a look at glamira.co.uk. I found them yesterday for the same reason - I wear platinum or white gold and H2B wears yellow gold. You can pick matching rings but have them made in different metals for bride and groom
