What songs make you get up and dance?

sherry, 4 April, 2009 at 18:45 Posted on Planning 0 9

We are having to make up 2 hours worth of songs for our wedding, for the time after we arrive until the singer starts.

So what dances make you get up and dance? (I'm thinking, cheesy music, pop music etc but not hardcore dance - if there is such a thing ?)

    Hi

I'm thinking less love songs and more just BOOGIE!

ANYTHING by James Brown, especially 'Get up offa that thing...'

    Pretty much anything mo-town.

Jackie Wilson - 'Your love keeps lifting me (higher and higher)' also 'the sweetest feeling'.

Stuff like the songs on the Commitments soundtrack.

Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Chic, The Jackson Five and Michael before he went odd; 'Don't stop til you get enough' etc

I'm a bit of an old school soul and disco diva, but this kind of stuff always gets me up dancing - good cheese I call it.

Not everyones cup of tea but I love to have a dance to Jamiroquai - Little L, canned heat and some of the earlier stuff.

Will have to put my thinking hat on for other stuff. Look forward to seeing what replies you get as we have to compile a list of genres / songs etc for our DJ.

Whitney Houston - I wanna dance with somebody

    Madonna - Like A Virgin/Material Girl

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean/ Blame It On The Boogie

Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle With You

    Abba - Dancing Queen/Mamma Mia/Super Trooper/Take A Chance on me.....

Love Is in the Air (slushy but fun)

BLues Brothers, Mustang Sally, early Beatles....

    I could go on

Thanks everyone, it's definitely more sing a long/dance stuff rather than love songs. The only love (ish) song we want is for our first dance - Counting my lucky stars by Larry Bagby.

? i've made a note of them all so far. xx

    Hi Sherry,

Here is a two hour play list. This was taken from DJ Sally's gig last night (It includes client pre-requests and on the night guest requests) and will soon be published Here, along with other Singe and DJ play list ideas:

    1. I don't feel like dancin' - Scissor Sisters
    2. Valerie - Amy Winehouse
    3. Billy Jean - Michael Jackson
    4. Place your hands - Reef
    5. Don't stop me now - Queen
    6. Take on me - A-ha
    7. Promise - Girls Aloud
    8. Mercy - Duffy
    9. Poker Face - Lady Gaga
    10. I see you baby - Groove Armada
    11. Faith - George Michael
    12. Don't stop till you get enough - Michael Jackson
    13. Think - Aretha Franklin
    14. Shake your tail feather - The Blues Brothers
    15. Twist again - Chubby Checker
    16. All shook up - Elvis
    17. I'm your man - Wham!
    18. 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton
    19. Footloose - Kenny Leggins
    20. Summer of 69 - Bon Jovi
    21. I'm gonna be (500 miles) - The Proclaimers
    22. Come on Eileen - Dexy's midnight runners
    23. Sweet child of mine - Guns N' Roses
    24. Living on a prayer - Bon Jovi
    25. Like a prayer - Madonna
    26. I wanna dance with somebody - Whitney Houston
    27. Dirty Dancing Medley - Various
    28. young hearts run free - Candi Staton
    29. You're the first, the last, my everything - Barry White
    30. One love - Bob Marley
    31. Kingston Town - UB40
    32. Stuck on you - Lionel Richie

A few things to note here:

    • This music was played from 10pm - 12pm (End of the night), which is why it slows towards the end. You may want to try something different towards the end as you will be building up to the Singer's own material.
    • The music was edited on the fly and chosen based on what the audience responded to best, which is why it's not really possible to find 'The perfect playlist' for all occasions and all types of audience. The guest last night seemed to resond much more to the classics and the 'typical' DJ play list - Every audience is different.
    • Everyone seems to have a different definition of what Cheese is but I think that this play list covers a few varieties!

    Anyway I hope this helps.

    Have a great time.

Ah good to hear! Yeah it's hard to say what will work for sure on the night. You get some groups who want lots of Indie/Pop or lots of very recent pop and R&B chart music. Because weddings nearly always have a few different generations due to various family members you will always find that something isn't someones cup of tea and pleasing the majority for the majority of the time is the biggest challenge. ?

Saying that there are some songs that will nearly always please people. DJs usually hold these back for that time when they most need that ultimate Guarantee!
