What time is acceptable for one's neighbours to be out shouting/swearing playing crappy dance music in the back garden

Roobarb, 29 August, 2008 at 21:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

The pr1ck through the wall from us (mummy and daddy - must be out or away on holiday) is having some kind of party. Now I'm not going to go round just now as I know it's still early but what time would be acceptable to expect him to turn down the volume? Last time the wee fanny did this it went on all night and most of the next day, and I am not putting up with that again this time, that is for certain.

BTW, this is not some kind of stupid teenager with an empty, but he's well into his 20s and I'd have thought capable of behaving himself.

I'd start getting really annoyed about 11pm. Tip if you are phoning the police - get some of your other neighbours to call too. I know our force won't respond to noise calls until 3 people have called in to complain.

Last time I went round and asked him to turn it down, and so did H (and he didn't), so I don't think he could really complain if we went to the cops this time. I'm nearly 7 months pregnant, have a 2 year old child and my H has to get up for work tomorrow, and I'm not putting up with his sh1t all through the night this time, especially not off of some wee pr1ck who still lives with his parents.

? I don't really know any of the other neighbours though, we've only lived here a few months.

I know it's annoying and you're pregnant and tired but it's Friday night and he is allowed to have a party in his own home. Hopefully he will have some consideration for you and your surrounding neighbours but maybe 11pm on a Friday is a bit too early to be complaining?

<says the person who is having a party herself next weekend! ?>

Well he didn't have any consideration last time for us when it went on for over 24 hours and I couldn't even sit out in the garden with my son due to their constant foul language and he's not in the house, he's out in the garden. Hence why it's so noisy. I'll maybe leave it till 12, I'm unlikely to go to bed before then anyway.

    Little arsehole ?

I think it depends TBH. If my neighbours across the hall had a noisy party on a Friday night as a one off I'd ignore it, as they are exemplary neighbours at all other times. But as the OP has had issues with noise before I think she's justified in being less tolerant.

FWIW I think as a one off midnight is fine, but I certainly wouldn't want that every Friday night.

Also swearing loudly when there are children in earshot is never justified IMHO.

Oh, and if it was proper music ie pop/rock I wouldn't mind nearly so much, but it's AWFUL! How the hell people can sit and listen to that crap is beyond me! It's terrible.

God, no, not every single night or even every single Friday! I think it's just showing consideration isn't it? Shutting windows and keeping the noise down after midnight. Fingers crossed his parents will be home soon! ?

Bollox. Just saw a taxi pull up and thought they might all be fucking off clubbing somewhere but no such luck, only 1 person went in the taxi. Bah.

well no he couldn't, but it still doesn't mean they will come...its noise nuisance, so its not the police's problem tbh.

the only guarenteed way of getting the police to come would to say you thought they were scrapping or something...but that does involve telling a thumping lie, which i woudn't dare do. or if it spilled out onto the street you could say you were concerned it was going to create a breach of the peace (worried other neighbours in a row would get involved or something)

have you tried the council? (assuming the law is the same in scotland of course)

I am pretty sure playing loud music/swearing loudly outside could count as breach of the peace. I understand the definition of that is somewhat wider here than in England...

I think the police would come. Where we lived before (only half a mile away) one of the kids a few doors down once had a loud party and someone (not us) must've called the police because they definitely came into the street.

ah right...that possible explains it then. we don't go to parties, unless its dead quiet elsewhere, or they are out in the street causing a disturbance. hows the noise now?

is it as hot in scotland as down here? i'd be fuming to have to have my windows shut tonight

fingers crossed they're not very busy though, otherwise by the time they come, the partiers could all be in a drink fuelled coma ☹️

When was the last 24 hour party? Just wondering if its an annual thing when his parents go on holiday?

It's crap and I do sympathise, our neighbour has belting parties every few months or so - we don't have kids to consider though so just use earplugs.

I'm aware from being a nosy smoking neighbour, that further down my street the police seemed to be called out nearly every weekend due to fuckwits having a party in their garden. After the police visit, it goes quiet for 1/2 hour or so then cranks up again.

If its regular, keeping a diary and getting the council involved may work better in the long run.

It appears to have stopped now. For the moment, if the last escapade was anything to go by it could crank up again any moment.

Last time was about June, maybe? It went on from teatime on the Friday till Sat evening (when I think they went clubbing). It was roasting that weekend too, hence why I was particularly hacked off at not being able to go sit in the garden.

ETA as it's (seemingly) stopped before 12 I won't mention it to his parents either, but if it cranks up again I will. I'm really not trying to be a killjoy as unbelievably enough I remember being his age myself ? but a bit of consideration wouldn't go amiss.

It's awful isn't it, our neighbours have a party like that about once a fortnight and their living room is next to our bedroom so the sound carries through the wall, all night. And we can't even go and yell at them as we live in top floor flats and the little feckers don't have a doorbell! ? hope they shut-up soon so you can get some rest.

Hopefully they've all gone clubbing or are now in a mellow mood.

    Here's to a peaceful night!

Errol two floors down from me has a birthday party once a year - it's absolutely insane. He invites most of the the neighbourhood and it's all dead respectable - everyone stands around chatting in their sunday best, but the music volume is just ludicrous. My strategy is to be elsewhere the middle Sunday in August.

If it was a regular occurence, you could call the noise pollution folk at the local council.

I know they work fairly late on the weekend, specifically for parties and such like.

Is it wrong that I want to go to Errol's party? I bet they listen to Erasure, Depeche Mode, Blondie, and a little bit of Scissor Sisters, The Killers and McFly to get an uptodate eclectic mix?

We never get any decent parties around here, just the must take drugs, big box-little box type.

Well the little twunt and his equally twuntish mates and orange girlfriends appear to be at it again tonight ? I am not too impressed. But again it may be they'll stop before 12. I hope his folks aren't away for a fortnight as we'll likely have this sh1t again next weekend, and H is running his first 10k next Sunday morning so he'll need to get a decent kip without being interrupted by arseholes.

He has been out in the front garden without his shirt on - I wish he wouldn't as he's pretty ? he has that invisible eyelash thing going on a la Boris Becker.

Is it worth having a word with him in advance of next weekend? Or might that make it worse?

He was actually OK last night - just out talking with his mates in the garden till the small hours which I can handle a lot better than music.

Hopefully he's asleep now - I'll just go do the hoovering and maybe mow the lawn ?

I think you should invite yourself along to the next party, hijack the music and put on something a little more in keeping with the mood

The Wombles, maybe? Bay City Rollers? A bit of Frank Sinatra?

I think the little squirt is now watching the old firm game as I keep hearing screaming, the type of which depending on whether it is Rangers or Celtic who have just scored. I think he is supporting Rangers. I don't care about football, but would quite like Celtic to win today, I think ?
