What to wear for dinner in a hotel?

Consuela Banana Hammock, 12 April, 2009 at 17:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Not me, I'm sorted! But rather my H.

We're off to Gidleigh Park in a fortnight to celebrate my 40th birthday and on the letter we received from the hotel when we booked it said that jackets should be worn by the men at dinner. H has only got a really old suit which he wears for weddings/interviews and so tomorrow we're planning to hit John Lewis, fist full of vouchers in hand, to buy the aforementioned jacket. Thing is, neither of us really know what we should be looking for. What sort of jacket? To wear with what? A full suit? A tie?!

Can somebody point me in the right direction? ?

I guess it depends on the hotel and on your husband. He could wear a full suit (with or without tie) or a jacket with a pair of trousers (not a suit though IYSWIM). Probably depends on what he feels most comfortable in too.

Wow just peeked at the hotel website, it looks lovely. Have a great time. Happy 40th for then too.

Assuming it's the same Gidleigh Park that's a michelin star restaurant, I'd go with smart so suit for him and dress for you. IMO jackets with trousers not matching can look rather odd e.g. one of our wedding guests (H's boss so def has suits) wore a light grey jacket and black trousers! I suspect the hotel doens't mean jacket with jeans.

Yep Champers - it's "that" Gidleigh Park. I've got an LBD and killer red shoes combo and I think a suit for H but he read the letter and assumed jacket and different trousers - I'll struggle to get him in a suit - he wears shirts and jeans to work as it is! ?

He booked it for me over six months ago although we've been walking past it for years as his parents live near by saying "one day ... one day ..." ? We've invited his parents to join us for dinner so it'll be a night for us all to remember.

The good news is H thinks a new suit is a fantastic idea and a great opportunity to bin his <ahem> 15 year old current one. Result me thinks.

If he thinks a suit and tie would be too stodgy, he could leave off the tie and wear a bold coloured shirt. loml does this and I think it looks lovely.

I'd insist H wore a suit. in any case, one good suit; never goes amiss. A classic suit will last for ages if he hasn't one, it doesn't have to be state of the art stuff. We go to quite a lot of functions that require suits or DJs but a good all rounder can't fail and if you shop around won't cost that much

Thanks Soph, thanks He11y - I think the no tie thing is a good idea - he's got a couple of fabulous coloured shirts but I'm sure I can convince to get another one. Thing is, he's an academic and so he lives in jeans and shirts and only wears suits for funerals/weddings/interviews so for him to agree to get a new suit - hey, I'm happy! ?
