What would you serve with cottage pie?

Gryfon, 4 January, 2009 at 12:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

I think I'm having people round tonight (mum can't decide) and I was going to do cottage pie. Now I can do bread to go with it but would you serve anything else with it? Usually when I make it we just have it in a bowl and I've never served it to a number of people before.

?

I just normally serve it on its own. Could you do crusty/garlic bread? Salad? Chips/wedges?

Personally, i never have it with any kind of bread, or other potatoes.

I usually have vegetables with it, usually greens or a cabbage, and some peas ( i put carrot in mine)

Broccoli and peas usually (I put carrots in the pie itself) and then extra gravy over it all.

Gravy and tomato sauce. Cordon bleu all the way in our house Smiley winking

Most people I know swear by red cabbage, but the thought of this makes me feel gippy!

Thanks all! I'll do some bread anyway as that always seems to go down well, and what I don't use gets made into croutons/bread sticks/bread crumbs. I usually stick most vegetables into the pie so I think I'll have onions, peas, carrots and mushrooms in it, just thought I might have a bag of frozen mixed veg in the freezer so I can always put that on as well.

Does anyone here put baked beans in their pie? Just seen it mentioned and I'm thinking it might bulk it out a bit more.

I would normally serve it with veg - probably boring things like peas, carrots & brocolli.

H's family always have it with baked beans which seems a bit odd to me.

There's a huge amount of carbs in it anyway with all the potatoes - having bread with is is as weird as pasta and chips?

green veg I'd say, cabbage or kale or peas, purple sprouting broccoli, that sort of thing.

My first instinct is "more cottage pie" ?

My mum always serves it with cauliflower cheese and like a child I mash it all together and it is yummy! I really want cottage pie now and we have no oven. ☹️

Have fun tonight, I'm sure it will go down well regrdless of what you serve it with.

I wouldn't have bread and potatoes in the same course and would def have a green veg on the side so there's some difference in the meal IYSWIM?

Either big massive sprouts of broccoli cooked al dente or Purple Sprouting Broccoli. I like to give myself lots of choice ?

I don't serve anything with it but I do have a layer of leeks (cooked in butter) between the meat and the potatoe (which is then covered in cheese)

Or rice and chips which the in laws like and oddly doesn't seem to be too uncommon in some eateries here in Scotland.

It HAS to be carrots, it's the law! And I'd go with broccolli too (Different taste, texture and adds colour....plus it's my favourite veg and I have I have it was most things!)

I put peas and carrots in the cottage pie anyway, but i always serve it with more gravy and savoy cabbage. I also sprinle grated cheese on top of the potato in the last 10 minutes of cooking.

I always put carrots in it and usually peas, so I'd serve with with a salad if the weather was warmish and broccoli if not, or peas/sweetcorn if I hadn't put peas in with the mince. It certainly doesn't need more carbs or, to my mind, more gravy!

We had a similar discussion last night as Nigella's salmon fishcakes with peas and tomato ketchup isn't a proper meal. ?

If we're doing cottage pie i tend to serve it with vegetables, probably carrots and brocolli or something similar and gravy.
