Whats wrong with a buffet not a sit down meal?

Callmechar, 8 June, 2010 at 19:40 Posted on Planning 0 24

After watching last nights 4 weddings and other wedding programmes, the vibe seems to be that buffets are not good and a sit down meal is needed. However I only want a buffet (cost and dont want a hot meal). What are your thoughts?

We're having a buffet and without sounding like a bridezilla I couldn't care less what other people think, it's our day and our decision ?We aren't getting married to impress anyone else or to make anyone else happy we are doing it for us.

Food is food at the end of the day. Our venue supplies our buffet which consists of mainly buffet type food, but is set out beautifully. The reviews I have read for them are great.

I personally don't have an issue with a buffet. We're having one but made it a bit more formal with a seating plan. If it fits the feel of your wedding why not have one. Ours will hopefully still be relaxed. We've only done the seating plan as I have family members who would want to sit with their own family and would panic if heaven forbid they have to socialise with anyone else

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a buffet at all, take no notice of 4 Weddings, they all want to win on there so pick as many holes as they can in each others weddings, and the girl who had a buffet won last night.

I have been to weddings with buffets and sit down meals and enjoyed the food as much at both. We considered a BBQ buffet for a while and only decided against it as we have some people with mobility problems coming so a meal would be easier, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a buffet, people will have more choice of what to eat rather than the one option they wil get at most sit down meals.

You should have the food you want to eat at your wedding, its your day and your choice, I think a buffet will be yummy! xxx

I agree completely! ? We too are having a seating plan, as we want people to feel comfortable whilst eating and go for a relaxed atmosphere. The real party can then begin when everyone as eaten, and if they are still hungry they can 'pick' throughout the night.

We are like a couple of people who said they had a seating plan but had a buffet. We loved the food we had for the buffet which included hot and cold options and even a curry

In my opinion, Surely it's personal choice? There's no wrong or right answer to this.

We are having a sit down meal for during the day because thats our personal choice and what we prefer, I am sure there will be guests who would of prefered a buffet...but tuff bananna's!

The eve will be a buffet. I have been to weddings with both and have enjoyed the food at both and to be honest never really thought "why isn't there a meal" at the bufet and Vice Versa.

I like the idea of still having a seating plan, As I remember one episode of Four weddings when there wasn't enough seats and the brides ended up eating standing up.. ooops!

We got into the whole, 'what if people don't have a good time' etc etc, But as long as we do thats all that matters.

    xXx

We are having a hot buffet (with seating plan) as our main meal, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. After all, people get more choice that way and can go back for seconds (very popular among my family!). What's not to like?!

I like buffets. I've had some lovely ones at weddings and some not so good. But that's the same as sit down meals - some good, some not so. I certainly don't think either makes a wedding better or worse. Food is important - bit of a foodie here! - but I really like a good buffet.

    Callmechar,

we are having a buffet only as well - and that wasnt even the plan, initially we werent even having any sort of reception!! like the other girls mentioned i have been to loads of weddings with meals and loads buffet and they have all had their good and bad points - but none of these were to do with the food!!! i think you go with whatever you and OH want - NOT what is dictated to you by a tv programme, family pressures or anything else!!! good luck chick xxx

I'm having a BBQ on the beach so I don't care! My after party i'm having a buffet. It will be more of an there is some food available than a actual meal iyswim. It's a 7-12 party with a buffet, but I expect people to not come starved, but still want a sandwich and a few other items that there is. If I was attending a wedding for a whole day I would expect more than just a sandwich but I a decent buffet would be fine. Both my wedding are short, my abroad one start about 5, and my after party one about 7 so not a whole day of food.

I agree with everyone, it's all about what you and your H2B want and can afford. We're having a sit down meal and an evening buffet, but if I went to a Wedding with a buffet instead of a meal, I probably wouldn't question it! As long as people eat and have a good time, it doesn't matter Smiley smile

The only problem I have seen with buffets is the fact that people have to go up and queue for their food one table at a time meaning that by the time the last table has gone up to get their food the first table has finished. Looking back at weddings we've been to that have had buffets I don't think it helped with the atmosphere as there are always people getting up throughout the whole meal and you often end up with a queue of people stood behind your table in a marque for example.

We are also having a buffet, we are a very laid back couple and a sit down meal for us just wouldnt have been ideal, also OH is such a fussy eater I dont think we would have found anything to agree on!

I think you have to do whats best for you, I wouldnt worry about the programme, some of the weddings on there are absolutely beautiful, but I would hate them because it wouldnt be me, just like my wedding would be a nightmare for other people!

Just to turn the tables, I prefer a sit down meal for the main meal, but only because I want to be sat down, relaxed and waited on and don't want to have to queue up to get my food. We will have a buffet in the evening for ease. As has been said before, each to their own tho.

I ❤️ buffet food, I could eat it all the time. I would have no problem at all with a buffet as long as there were definitely places to park my bum while I tackle the mound of food.

Must be proper plates...no paper ones folding up on me sarnies

Must have a good mix of hot/cold, veggie/meaty options

I also like miniture things like mini jacket potatoes, mini burgers/hotdogs etc.

Nothing wrong with buffet at all!!

We have chosen buffet over sit down meal and thats down to two major factors, price and the fact we have quite a children attending.

We are still having a formal seating arrangment i.e top table ect and guests will be shown to the buffet table by table and served what they require. It also gives guests the choice of eating what they want and how much.

We were going to have a three course dinner, nothing special just soup, chicken dinner and perfiteroles (dont know how to spell it lol) But with 100 guests in the day and at over £30 a head it was getting way over budget for such a simple meal compared to the buffet at £18 per which as well as your normal sandwiches ect includes a full side of beef, roast potatoes, full salmon, exotic fresh fruit and lots of nibbles for the kids. Have seen the photos of the buffet from previous weddings at looks fabulous!!

I was so pleased when we received the quote back and I think get a lot more for your money.

Good luck to all the BTB

This is what my daughter is having - a formal type buffet of hot food with a mix of salads with something for everyone and a continuous flow of it so that the last table doesn't end up with no food!

Absolutely nothing!! We are thinking about having a hog roast buffet, as buffets always seem to go down so well at weddings (or so I've always thought). I always really like them. It gets everybody moving as well, and chatting to various people ?

We went to see a venue and really wanted a buffet and told the wedding person we wanted a seating plan - and she told me that wasn't possible to have a buffet and a seating plan - how ridiculous!! so, we are not getting married there!!!! i'ver since heard she is a bit of a dragon and wants all the weddings done her way!

without meaning to sound like a princess, its our day and if we want a seating plan and a buffet, then that's what we'll have!!

in the end, we're having a sit down meal, but only cos it surprisingly worked out cheaper than the buffet (and NOT at that venue!)!!

its your day - you have what you want!

i have started not telling people about my decisions cos everyone had an opinion on everything and you'll never please everyone!!
