What's your remedy for a sore throat? ...also beetroot and chocolate cake...whats mellow yellow??!

clairegwen, 29 April, 2009 at 08:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I currently have a viral infection with an awful sore throat to the point that my toes curl under every time I swallow. I'm going to nip out later to get some honey and just wondered what your remedies are?? I can't gargle so thats out. I have been sucking throat lozengers and Strepsils but they don't seem to be doing much good.

Also....

Changing the subject completely here, OH mentioned somebody at work made beetroot and chocolate cake and it was fantastic. I have googled and come up with a few recipes but one of them calls for 240ml of Mellow Yellow. What the hell is Mellow Yellow??

TIA

Claire

Not helpful but I gargle lemon and salt in half a cup of warm water and it always does the trick, although its quite gross.

Bradosol is the best lozenge there is IMO - you could try those.

ETA - no idea about Mellow Yellow - its a song though ? - i've googled but no helpful results - how odd! are they English or American recipes?

Slice up about an inch of ginger root, add hot water and honey. Bash it around a bit to release the juices from the ginger. It's very effective and it's a natural anti-viral.

(warning - it's also vile if you don't like ginger but I force myself as it does work)

I think its a British site I have the recipe from? Very odd, I can only find that its a song too, maybe you have to sing when you are making it ? bit difficult at the moment with my throat!

fraya - you mention Manuka honey, will I find that in Tesco? and also whats the UMF you refer to (think thats what you put, I can't see your post at the same time as replying!!!)

UMF is the "strength" of the honey. The higher the number the better it is. Tescos may stock it but its available at health food shops. Its not cheap and can cost £10-15 for a small pot

Thanks fraya. Not sure I can afford to pay that for a jar of honey just for myself, but then again, if I manage to pass this on to the rest of the family it may just come in use!!!

I know you said you cant gargle but disolving a soluble asprin in water and gargling always works for me, I was always told to do that by the pharmacist when I worked for Boots.

and I'm thinking if its hurting so bad you'll try anything ?

Mellow Yellow appears to be rapeseed oil: https://www.farrington-oils.co.uk/home.html

Try home made honey and lemon, a table spoon of honey a number of drops of lemon and hot water.

When I had tonsillitis, I gargled with tcp in water digusting but worked. But this does not help if you can not do it sorry.

I have had my fiar share of sore throats over the years and even after having my tonsils out If I get run down I still get bad sore throats. I have always had merocaine, they are an antiseptic? lozenge. They may make your tongue go slightly numb if you keep them in one place for too long. I usually try and suck on them quite close to the back of the mouth (without gagging or swallowing), really good at easing that horrible discomfort!
