When did you buy your dress?

Emma, 14 August, 2020 at 19:14 Posted on Planning 0 50
I am getting married in August 2021 and I am already looking at wedding dresses ? how long before your wedding did you start shopping around for your dress? And when did you buy your dress?

    Congratulations on your wedding!

Most dresses if they are being ordered take at least 6 months to come in so I think a year ahead is a good time to be looking.
I’m getting married in 4 weeks and I ordered my dress at the beginning of December but was trying dresses on in November. My dress arrived in June and I’ve had plenty of time to have alterations.
Have loads of fun shopping x

    Hi
I'm getting married in aug 2021 aswell an I went dress shopping for the first time on friday an I'm pretty sure I've found the dress ? I wanted to start as soon as poss as they said some dresses can take 8 months to arrive!! (If you dont buy off the rack) and it gives you plenty of time to shop around (I had no idea I'd find the one on the first trip out ? )
    Have fun shopping x

Yes, the place I went asks for 50% deposit then the rest when it arrives.
I havent done that yet as i had another appointment booked at another shop so wanted to honour the appointment but I rekon I'll defo be going back for the dress (will be pretty hard to top)
I'm glad I started looking this early tho as the ones I had in mind that I liked, I didnt like on me an the one that I dismissed when looking on the hanger is the one that i really like and want ??

    Fancy that happening haha.

Well originally I was looking online at jjs house they have some beautiful dresses on there they make them to your measurements but I am panicking about the dress not fitting right on the day so I am now emailing round my local wedding shops to see there price ranges and at least I can try some on in person and get proper alterations done etc.
I don't want to be spending more than £300 on a dress though as we are only having a small church wedding and not having any sort of reception due to covid xx

I looked on there, they do have some stunning dresses dont they. Have you checked reviews for there?
That's the only trouble with online buying, getting the fit just right.
Where abouts are you?? I went to copplestones bridal in liverpool they have dresses 50% off rrp. There are quite a few places that do off the rack or sample sales that are reasonably priced (worth googling to see if any places near you do)Or you could go to a few appointments to see what suits you and then you definatly no what styles, sizes etc for if you are ordering online?

Yeah they have some really lovely ones on jjs house.
I'm in Derby so I've emailed around the ones closest to me.
I mean could I go to a bridal shop literally just to try on with no intention of buying yet if I told them my price range I am willing to pay? I feel bad for trying but not buying ?? but like you said you go to a few shops until you find the one don't you x

Some people go to loads of shops before buying a dress. My sister in law went to about 8 places before finding hers lol after all you cant buy a dress in every shop lol
If a shop have your price range and a dress you love then of course that would be the one you pick (they shouldn't show you anything over your budget) but if you went to a few an you still didnt find the one you wanted but have a better idea of styles then online could be the way to go. Esspecially if theres only so many shops in your area.
It's hard as it's not like normal dress shopping, but it's still fun. Enjoy it, I was nervous at first (dont no why) but it was fun. The perfect dress is out there somewhere weather it be in store or online ??

Your welcome, its stressful planning a wedding isnt it (were doing almost everything ourselves as we are on a budget) then with covid happening aswell it's a nightmare.
You said you were having a small church wedding but no reception? At least you havent got the added stress of that too.
Oohh your before me, We are getting married 21st august x

Yeah we aren't having a reception incase we have to move dates or they ban weddings again at least then its not as stressful, we were thinking of going to Miller and carter's for a meal afterwards with our parents and siblings and their families but not sure if we will definatley be doing that yet.
The vicar has said she will be in touch to meet us september/October time so I'm abit worried it's not set in stone yet as we haven't seen her to give a deposit but she took our names down etc and asked us what time we would like to get married so I'm nervous about that still x

It is a pain having the uncertainty isnt it but trying to stay positive. Least if it's a meal afterwards somewhere that can be booked nearer the time if things are still up in the air.
She may have penciled you in so should be ok if you gave all the details x

    Hiya

Can I ask what your experience was like at Copplestones? I am in Liverpool and am in a bit of a wedding dress pickle!

We were due to get married this September, and so I bought my dress at Wed2B in May last year, so 18 months before our original date. Since then I have had surgery to remove about a stone of loose skin; I lost 8 stone and was left with loads of loose skin on my abdomen and arms. The original dress I bought was before all this was removed, so covered me up a lot.

Now I am a different shape and another stone down, and our wedding is now another 12 months away. I am doubting my choice of dress - both in style and silhouette. I will be 51 when we finally tie the knot , but feel and look (I hope!) much younger than that.

So, I am thinking that I might need another dress which suits my new shape better!

    Ali xx

Well done on losing the weight ?? you must feel great.
I had a really great time there. The lady who did my appointment (cant remember her name) was lovely, she explained where everything was an how it worked then left me to look around, but she was in the background for a bit of advice if needed. She was as helpful as she could be when I was trying the dresses on, adding a veil to complete the look and also suggested a style that I had oridionally dismissed, which in the end was my favourite an I'm sure I will be going back for. She defo new her stuff ?
They have lots of dresses to choose from and a lot of them were on sale at massive reductions. I'd recomend going there as it was so relaxed and no preasure to buy there and then and theres so much to pick from. Hope this helps x

If you need a wedding dress next week you will only be able to get off the rack. Some shops will have samples they are selling but not many in my experience. Your best bet would be wed2b as that’s take away the same day or the high street, Debenhams or monsoon have bridal gowns. Also ASOS do a bridal range not sure if you could get a next day delivery but you are not likely to have time to get something altered unless you are willing to pay a lot for it.
Very good luck in finding your dress

I can’t comment on JJ’s house, they have very mixed reviews but my MIL’s sister got her dress from stacees.com and was very happy with the quality. I would say try wed2b so you can look at silhouette and styles as there isn’t the pressure of a normal bridal shop then you can find something online that you love. Don’t forget to budget for alterations also. The other place I mentioned to someone else is ASOS have a lot of beautiful dresses less than £300

I had found a bridal shop near me that's got dresses that were meant to be £1000+ for £299 on sale and adjustments are £30-£60 so I'm going to book an appointment to go there in the next few weeks xx

Our wedding is September 2021 and I bought mine this week. Well paid deposit. Takes 16w to come in so will be about December when it comes in then alterations. Loads of bridal shops are having sales and i had the week off work so it made sense!

I am getting married in February 2022. I am making my own dress and have already made a good start. I am also making outfits for my six bridesmaids and doing a good amount of DIY for stationery and decorations, so I wanted to be ahead of the game on my most important task!

I do have an advantage that I don't change shape very much at all, so gaining/losing weight is not a huge concern for me, but I do plan to leave the possibility to make alterations until much closer to the date when I do a 'final fitting'.

I'm in May 2021 and I bought my dress today so that seems ok. The only issue is whether I can stay at this size until it arrives - no losing or putting on and I'm on a diet because of covid weight.

I found my dress last August and my original date was October this year. I started so early because I expected it to take a while as I’m not a dress wearer! It arrived end of January this year

My wedding was originally September this year and I ordered my dress in March and even that was a bit tight because it usually takes about 6 months. Luckily I have an awesome bridal salon so they’ve delayed my dress until Christmas so I don’t have to worry about storing it for over a year because my new date is OCT 2021

    Congratulations! ?
I am getting married August 2021 too and I have already bought my dress ? well my Mum bought it lol about 2 weeks ago. I saw it on a bridal shop on Ebay (brand new £125) and knew it was the one as it is the exact thing I had in mind and was looking at a few weeks before but all priced too dear. I wad going to leave it but my Mum said to get it as it is a size 14 corset back so it can go up or down by 3 inches.. so it will definitely fit me next year! ?
