Where can I buy Buttermilk?

londonbride, 4 August, 2008 at 15:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I want to follow an American recipe for cupcakes and it calls for buttermilk. I have never seen this but Ihave never looked.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Asda, along with the cream/creme fraiche type stuff

probably in the other supermarkets, too

or just add lemon juice to normal milk.

It's not always easy to find. I just use normal milk soured with a bit of vinegar, or you can use natural yoghurt.

No need for that Nick. I searched for it on my supermarket online shop but to no aval. Thats why I ask!

I mean I have never needed to look for it. But I have never seen it anywhere. I assumed it was an american thing. I have seen in super markets in the US while not looking for it!

Thanks Cath Ill have a PROPER look for it. Is it a slightly sour milk then? I always thought it was sweet and creamy.

They sell it in our local Sainsburys, its with the cream, sour cream, etc. They only do one size however.

It's not that easy to find in my local supermarkets. My local Sainsbury's stocks it sporadically and the assistant in Tesco looked at me blankly when I queried whether they stock it. The only supermarket I can consistently get it from is Waitrose.

I don't think soured milk makes such nice muffins. Been there, tried that. The consistency isn't the same, for starters, so add less than the recipe says initially in case the mixture becomes too wet.

Our local Tescos has it, but it's on the shelf above the milk, not with the cream etc.

Our local corner shop has it.... But that probably doesn't help!

Think it must be more widely available this side of the water as it would be found in everywhere from A smallish Spar store upwards here, alongside the ordinary milk.

However as others have said you can 'sour' milk with lemon or vinegar and use that.

I've always found it in the supermarket with the milk/cream and our local farm shop sells it too.

I get mine in my tesco online shop; it's St Ivel IIRC. Alternatively, 50% natural yoghurt and 50% milk gives the correct taste and consistency for muffins.

The only place I've ever found it is Morrisons. I've tried all the other supermarkets (OK, not Waitrose!) and they generally haven't a clue what I'm talking about.
