    1) First of all, sit down together and work out how much you can afford - and WANT - to spend. I know it's boring, but you don't want to start married life with a ton of debt because you've overspent!

    2) Discuss what you want your wedding to look like and what is most important to you and make a list in order of importance - be ruthless about cutting out stuff that doesn't matter to you. Just because 'everyone' has something for their wedding, it doesn't mean that you have to, so save your money for what matters to you. You also need to have a rough idea of the number of guests you want at this stage, because that is going to have a huge impact on budget - more people equals more catering costs plus the number of guests will affect the size of venue you can pick.

    3) Work out a rough budget based on 1 and 2. You don't have to stick to it exactly, just remember if you go over budget in one area, you will have to cut back in another. Remember to include the cost involved in the actual marriage ceremony (giving notice/registrar/minister/celebrant etc) as that's something a lot of people overlook.

    4) Once you know how much you can spend and how many people you hope will come, you can start looking for a venue - because you can't book any vendors until you can give them a location and date. After that, I'd probably choose the photographer next - good ones can get booked up a couple of years in advance, especially on popular dates.

    5) There are loads of online 'checklists' for things that need to be done before the wedding. (Hitched used to have one - not sure if it still does) Do remember though that these lists cover every possible thing you might want to have for your wedding, so just because it says 'buy bridesmaid proposal gifts' or 'book a photo booth for the reception' doesn't mean you have to have those things!

Hi, thank you so much for your questions and advice — I really appreciate it!
I’ll definitely keep following this thread. At the moment, my partner and I are still trying to get on the same page and figure things out together, so we’re just taking a bit of time to talk everything through. The only thing we’ve been thinking about for a long time is having some fun here , interactive games. Last year around Valentine’s Day there was a really cool selection of activities for couples, and I thought something similar could work really well for a wedding too.

Thanks again for sharing your experience 🤍

Planning something big—whether it’s a wedding or a home project—can feel totally overwhelming at first, so you’re not alone in wondering where to even start! Breaking it down step by step like others have suggested (budget first, then venue and timeline) really does help make things feel more manageable. And just like organizing a major life event requires the right experts, everyday home needs like keeping your garage door in perfect working order are best left to professionals too—check out the doorpro website for trusted advice and services that can take one more thing off your mind as you plan everything else.
