Which breeds of dogs have wool coats?

Janna, 20 October, 2008 at 20:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

We are at the very beginning of considering having a dog (won't actually get one for a couple of years) but I have an allergy to some dog hair. I do know that some breeds some a wool coat, rather than hair and I wondered if anyone knew what the breeds were please?

?

Poodle, Bichon Frise, Schnauzer, Airedale. I'm sure there's more but those are off the top of my head.

There are also lots of very low shedding dogs. We have a miniature Dachshund and she sheds very little and always teeny tiny hairs that look like short eyelashes. She barely loses any hair at all in the colder months. Italian Greyhounds are similar in this way.

We have TT's (Tibetan Terrers) - They have a wool type coat that does not shed like other dogs, but is still hair .

If you do consider a dog please look into it really well if you have allergies, Wool coats cannot always have a no allergy gurantee as its often the saliva that effects some people.

If you can try to find a person with the sort of dog you are interested in and get to be around it lots ,Find a really good breeder that will let you visit the puppies weekly before bringing one home hopefully ensuring you wont have any allergic reactions.

Dogs coats also change after puppyhood so what you may not have been allergic too before you may be later on.

However if you do your research well there is no reason why you wont be able to find the perfect dog.

I work as a fosterer for Labradoodle rescue and im sad to say most dogs that come in are because of allergies, most upsetting for the dog and the owners. Labradoodles as any dog are not guranteed against allergies.

    Good luck

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.

Clodders - thank you, we will definitely put lots of thought in to this before getting on - we're about 2 years away from being in a position to get one anyway.

My next door neighbours have a beautiful Tibetan Terrier and I'm fine with her, so I'm hopeful there are some breeds that I'll be okay with.

    Thanks again.
